Sally Kidd Obituary

Lifelong Winchester resident Sally Kidd (Holmes) passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2021 in the loving arms of her daughters and dear friend Brenda. Sally was born on July 28, 1930 and persevered through a bout with Covid-19 in June; treatment for cancer in the fall; and the infirmities that come with reaching the age of 90. We are so proud of her strength and desire to squeeze everything she could out of life. Sally was a proud alumna of Winchester H.S., class of 1948, and of Mt. Holyoke College, class of 1952. In her teens, Sally completed a solo bike ride to Canada; in her twenties she got her pilots license and flew small planes while working days as a research chemist for American Cyanamid and then Polaroid. As a young mom, she bought a scooter with a sidecar to transport her 3 girls around town and for the occasional skip day from school with lunch out at a diner. She went on to officiate womens and girls sports, rising to the rank of State Official and Commissioner of the Watertown Womens Softball League. In addition, Sally umpired mens recreational softball leagues throughout the metro region. In 1990, she became a tax practitioner for H&R Block and provided tax services as a volunteer at the Jenks Senior Center in Winchester. Throughout her life Sally was a regular attendee of the Boston Symphony, loved theater trips to New York City and world travels. She enjoyed playing her banjo and ukelele and played and sang with various local ensembles for many years. Sally and her first husband Charles Greene raised their three girls who survive her: Lydia of Amherst, NH; Molly of Princeton, NJ; and Alice and her wife Dinah of New York, NY. She also leaves six grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren who will carry on the tradition of family gatherings with games of scrabble, cribbage and Russian bank. Sally was pre-deceased by her second husband Bill Kidd and by her dearest friend Jim Ryan. She was also pre-deceased by her twin sister, Peggy;, brothers Stephen and David; and her parents Harriet and Robert Holmes. She will always be loved. Services will be held this summer. Sally loved the Winchester Public Library and donations in her memory can be made to the Friends of the Winchester Library https:// www.winpublib.org/friends/

I just learned about Sally's passing. I want to extend my condolences to the whole family. Sally was a participant in a memoir-writing workshop I led at the Jenks Center almost 20 years ago -- her stories were loving tributes to her friends and families, and always filled with the wry, dry humor she tended to favor. She was always one of my favorite writers.
