Arthur Holcomb Obituary

HOLCOMB YADKINVILLE - Mr. Arthur C. Holcomb, 85, of Yadkinville peacefully passed away on September 4, 2010 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Holcomb was born September 14, 1924 in Yadkin county to the late Charlie and Ella Byrd Holcomb. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Dorothy Adams Holcomb of the home; and his four children: Margaret (Charles) Taylor of Winston-Salem, Jean (Dennis) Kelly of Atlanta, GA, Dale (Angie) Holcomb of Yadkinville, and Lisa (Mark) Counsell of Atlanta, GA. Arthur was also the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren: Jennifer (Brent) Jacques of Apex, Suzanne (Damond) Van Weerdhuizen of Winston-Salem, Brad Shepherd of Atlanta, Jordan and Garrett Holcomb of Yadkinville, and Sidney, Riley, and Grace Counsell of Atlanta; four great-grandchildren, Mason and Madison Van Weerdhuizen of Winston-Salem, and Grant and Leighton Jacques of Apex. Mr. Holcomb is also survived by one sister, Laura Lee Shore; and nephew, Jimmy Shore, both of Yadkinville; and niece, Debbie McAuley of East Bend, as well as a lot of close dear friends that he shared many happy memories with over the years. Mr. Holcomb was a veteran of World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and the French Legion of Honor Medal. He was a member of the E291st Company in the 75th Infantry Division. He was a member of Yadkin VFW Post 10346, a charter member of Yadkinville Fire Department where he served in several capacities for over 50 years including the honor of being a former Yadkinville Fire Chief, and was a co-owner and President of Holcomb Creosote Company in Yadkinville where he had worked for over 50 years. He also proudly received his long awaited North Carolina High School Diploma in May of this year. Arthur attended the Yadkinville Pentecostal Holiness Church until his illness progressed and prevented his attendance. The family would like to express their gratitude, appreciation and thanks to the entire staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and to his special care giver, Debra Zoutes for all their support and loving and compassionate care provided not only to Dad, but to Mother and our family as well. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday September 6, 2010 at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 North of Yadkinville. His Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Gentry Family Chapel followed by a Graveside Service with Full Military Honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346 at the Yadkinville Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Services will be conducted by the Rev Mac Cassell, the Rev. Steven Harrelson, and the Rev. James Williams. Fowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to either Mountain Valley Hospice, PO Box 1267, Yadkinville, NC 27055 or to Yadkin VFW Post 10346, 2712 Sloans Mill Road, Hamptonvile, NC 27020. To the Family

What a wonderful man he was. He was funny, sensitive, intelligent and a pleasure to be around. I enjoyed the times that he was a patient at the hospital and enjoyed taking care of him. Dale you were always their to watch over him. I know he will be greatly missed by everybody that knew him. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless and keep you.
