Foss Smithdeal Obituary
Ty was born on April 7, 1943 in Winston-Salem, NC. He enjoyed a very full life. He loved his family and he loved his Lord. He was a veteran of the Navy and was happy to serve. In later life he was ordained as an Episcopal Deacon and was privileged to serve God in many ways. One of his favorite things was to read the Gospel of the Lord every Sunday. He is known by everyone for his storytelling. It made him so happy to talk about his adventures. One of his passions was being on the water. He was an expert sailor and enjoyed many years of sailing leisurely or racing. He and his beloved and devoted wife Debra had grand times, especially sailing on Lake Norman.
Ty is survived by his wife Debra and his children: Foss T. Smithdeal III (Gwynn) of Advance, NC; William Reid Smithdeal (Erica) of Sylva, NC; Heather S. King (John) of Harrisonburg, VA; Megan S. Vengala (Chris) of Candler, NC; Reagan S. Tieskoetter (Ron) of Sarasota, FL; Betsey S. Little (Trent) of Surfside Beach, SC. Eighteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren lovingly called him Papa. He is also survived by his sister, Dianne Hodges of Winston- Salem, NC and her three children. He is preceded in death by his parents Foss T. Smithdeal Sr. and Lucia J. Smithdeal.
Ty will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his genuine love of life, his quiet strength, and the unwavering kindness and care he extended to everyone.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church on Saturday, August 23 at 11 a.m. The address is 113 Baskervill Drive Pawleys Island, SC 29585. The service will be available by livestream by going to holycrossfm.org. A reception including lunch will follow the service at the church.
