Joseph Sykes Obituary
October 17, 1943 - April 5, 2024
Mr. Joseph "Jay" Wiley Sykes Sr, 80, was reunited with his loved ones in Heaven on Friday April 5, 2024. Jay was born on October 17, 1943, to the late Rev. Virgil Joseph and Nonie Heath Sykes in Newport News, VA. He worked for the City of Winston-Salem as a maintenance supervisor for 31 years before retiring. Jay loved the Lord and was an active member of his church for many years. He had a love of fishing and spending time out in his mountain house. Jay loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, they were the light of his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Jay is survived by his children, Lynn (Mitch) Stevens of Ararat, NC, and Joseph W. Sykes Jr. of Advance, NC; grandchildren Trinica (Shannon) Shumate of Mt. Airy, NC, RJ "Ray" (Michelle) Poindexter of Wallburg, NC, Chris (Shauna) Poindexter of Pace, FL, Tessa (Jason) Chrismon of Ararat, NC, Caden Sykes of Advance, NC, and Charlee Jo Sykes of Advance, NC; great-grandchildren, Kolin, Hannah, Reid, Bailee, KK, Ava, Noah, Willow, Emmalee, Lily, Cash, Leo and Casen; and brother, Gene (Theresa) Sykes of Clemmons, NC. Along with his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his sisters Betty Capps and Elizabeth "Liz" Johnson.
A graveside service will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Dustin Montgomery officiating. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek on Thursday April 11, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
