August 25, 1938 - July 26, 2022

SFC Roger Dean Gist Sr., USA, Retired, the son of Evelyn Kathleen Gist, was born 25 August 1938 in Pacolet, SC. He completed his final mission on 26 July 2022. After high school, Roger attended classes at Surry County Community College. His distinguished military career in the US Army earned him the rank of sergeant first class. He retired with 17 years of service. Later, as a counselor and attorney-â€"in fact, he represented veterans with Disabled American Veterans (DAV) for 23 years. He held memberships with the DAV, American Legion, and Non Commissioned Officers Association. Those who remain to cherish his memory and legacy include his children: Roger D. Gist Jr., Regina D. (George) Freyberger, Ronnie D. (Lhaila) Gist, Ramon D. Gist (Sonya Miller), Rochelle D. Gist, Ryan D. (Nani) Gist; 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; siblings: Fletcher Gist, Larry Gist, Dorenda (Buttercup) Gist, Catherine Gist, Marion Gist, Ora Mae Gist, John (Popeye) Gist, and Brenda Richardson; a host of nieces and nephews and special friends.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2022 in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery.

I just found out Roger has past away and I am so very sorry -My late husband , Dennis Rushing worked with Roger in the DAV for many years as a Service Officer - Roger was also a close friend of our family -He spent time fishing and traveling with us on trips with the DAV and other places - Our family loved Roger -He was a fine man and a good friend . He was so proud of his children and spoke of them often- He called me two years ago when I lost my husband -He was so kind in his message to me- May he Rest In Peace- Janet Rushing Wilmington,NC-
