Benjamin Murphy Obituary

Benjamin P. Murphy

Springettsbury Twp. - Benjamin P. Murphy, age 52, of Springettsbury Township, York died Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at his residence.

Born March 19, 1968, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, a son of Arthur T. "Tom" Murphy, III, and Joanne K. Murphy, of York, he was a 1986 graduate of York Suburban High School. He attended Fork Union Military Academy and Shippensburg University where he made the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team in his freshman year.

Sports played a major role in Mr. Murphy's life. He was the first freshman to play varsity football at York Suburban High School and in 1985 he was named York County's Defensive Player of the Year. The York Daily Record had named him as one of the Fabulous 40 Athletes and he was No. 1 on York Suburban's Ten Best Athletes for three different sports all four years of his high school career. He played for the York Yankees in the Central League and played on four championship teams in the Colonial Tournament. He was the first York County player to make Tri-County All-Stars for football and also the first player in York County to make the American Legion Eastern All-Star Finals for three consecutive years.

If you are reading this and drank at Murph's or the Other Bar, you knew Ben. He has worked in the family businesses throughout his life. Ben spent many a night around the bar talking sports and serving drinks. Quick wit, hilarious one-liners, and timely comments were a staple for Ben. He had a knack, a gift for knowing what people needed on a particular night. If there were to be jokes at their expense or if a little pick me up/cheer up conversation was needed. That was Ben. In his honor please share your favorite "Ben" stories and one-liners.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Murphy is survived by his brother, Kevin A. Murphy, and his wife Jennifer, of York; nieces, Payton and Delaney Murphy; and his nephew, Callahan Murphy.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Thursday, October 29, 2020, at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York. Viewings will be 5-7:00 PM Wednesday and 9-11:00 AM Thursday. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to York County SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17406, or to Olivia's House Grief & Loss Center for Children, 830 South George Street, York, PA 17403.

Ben, you will always be in our hearts - you will be missed, but never forgotten.

Dear Tom, Joanne and Kevin, So sorry to hear about Ben.. I played against him in high school and had the opportunity to play with him in the early 90's. Incredible competitor, great heart and soul. The one thing I remember about Ben is the bigger the stage the better he played. In the 1994 York Colonial Tournament Ben rocked the whole weekend, catching multiple games every day and delivering the big hits when needed, believe he was the MVP. I will miss him..

Joanne, Tom & Kevin-
I am so sorry to hear the news of Ben passing. He was one of my best friends. I have played against Ben in baseball since I was 14 years old, and then I had the opportunity to play with Ben in the Central League for Victory AA and the York Yankees. After our playing days, I enjoyed traveling with Ben to many out of state stadiums and ballparks. Through these travels, I got to know the Ben that most people didn’t. Ben had a huge heart and he cared about people even though he didn’t like to let on that he did. I have so many memories of Ben that I don’t know where to start. I guess one of my favorite stories is when he was at the OTB and he grabbed the remote behind the counter and hid it in his shorts and would change the channel just as the horses were coming down the final stretch—he would switch it to a cartoon! People went berserk! I have so many memories with Ben that I could write a book! Ben was one of a kind and I will miss him.

Tom, Joanne, and Kevin,

I’m so sorry. The news still hasn’t fully sunk in. Ben was in so many ways larger than life, and I feel fortunate to have had so many great interactions with him and your family - from the Midland/Ogontz days, to the Study Hall, to that first York Yankees team. I hope you find some comfort in the outpouring of support from all over the community. You’ll be in my thoughts.

Mr and Mrs Murphy, Kevin and family-

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I remember when I met Ben in Jr High, and he was always so full of life. Always joking around and having a good time- and in class too, he'd make classes interesting for sure.

He was one of the best athletes I've ever met. He inspired many (including me) on and off the field. I'll never forget our senior year together on the football team. It was an honor to block for him as one of the big guys up front.

Hold on to your memories of him. So so sorry Murphy family. Prayers.

My condolences to Ben’s family and friends. I knew Ben as a teammate briefly on the Victory Club’s Central League Baseball team in the late ‘80s, but lost touch later. Ben was a pure athlete who loved to compete.
