Janet T. Schell

YORK Janet Therese Dougherty Schell, 64, died Wednesday, July 25, 2013, at York Hospital. She was the wife of William H. Schell. The couple celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on April 8. Janet was born on April 29, 1949, in Scranton, the daughter of Claire Howard Dougherty and the late Donald Dougherty. She was a graduate of Harrisburg Area Community College and Kent State University. She was a longtime board member of Shadowfax Corporation, serving as board secretary for many years. Janny-Bird had a special affinity for plants, animals, and wayward souls. She was fond of birds, travel, and music, and was a wonderful cook. She will be remembered by those who knew and loved her for her beautiful laugh, her kindness and patience, and for taking care of people and making them feel loved. She is survived by her husband, their daughter, Elise Claire Schell, and their dog, Sweet Pea. In addition to her immediate family and her mother, she is also survived by six siblings, Donald Dougherty and wife Sharon of Tampa, Fla.; Mary Claire Dougherty and husband, Fred Brown of Harrisburg; Joan Batdorf and husband, Mike of Harrisburg; Ann Hach and husband, William of Baltimore; Regina Oldham and husband, Paul of Harrisburg; Michael Dougherty and wife, Stacy of Darien, Conn.; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Hylan Schell of Harrisburg; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph Schell and wife Joanne of Harrisburg; Gerald Schell and wife, Victoria of Sarasota, Fla.; Mary Ballos and husband, Bob of Dauphin; Loretta Hopper and husband, Donald of Apex, N.C.; John Schell and wife, Amy of Coopersburg, Pa.; many nieces and nephews; honorary family, including: Marc Rovner and Trish Calvani of Mountville; the Hach family of Wood Dale, IL; Katie Stence of Paris, France; and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her father and her father-in-law, Joseph Leo Schell. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 18 at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York. The family welcomes those who knew Jan to join in the celebration. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jan's memory to Shadowfax Corporation, 149 S.
