I met Gary Cuda in 1946 as a fellow 1st grader at St. Joseph's school in York, NE. I had just moved to York and we became friends and remained so over 77 years. Gary agreed to share apartments with me in Lincoln after I left home and we moved to Colorado for a while, driving back and forth every two weeks. We didn't seem to be saving much money that way so we moved back to Lincoln. Vietnam was going on and so Gary and I both joined the service, he went Army and I went Navy. When my term of service was over I stayed in Southern California and sometime after asked Gary to come on out and enjoy the paradise that the LA area was at that time, and he did. He got a very good job in Hollywood and became familiar with both sides of Mulholland Drive. Gary however had very strong ties with Nebraska and finally moved back there. These ties manifested themselves in his becoming our Class of 57 Historian whereby our good classmate Gary would notify by mail any and all happenings that occurred that would be of interest to us, weddings, funerals, reunions, etc. He meticulously would spend time at the library copying newspaper articles and enclosing them in envelopes addressed to each and every former classmate. Personally, since Gary was such a special friend, I would call him by phone every month or so from California while I lived there and then from Washington when I moved there, these calls could last anywhere from one to three hours, reminiscing about the "'good ol' days" and sometimes heated discussions about politics, as we were of opposite parties. The discussions always ended amiably, both agreeing to disagree. Gary was my Best Man at our wedding and was the person who drove my wife and I and our new baby daughter home from the hospital. He was there at our daughter's first few birthdays and we always considered him a part of our family. Gary was very good about keeping us informed as to everything going on back in Lincoln by clipping out news articles from the Lincoln paper and also the York paper. He purchased and sent us subscription to the excellent Nebraska Magazine, the Reminisce magazine and then other magazines that came out occasionally pictorially showing the history of Lincoln. I visited him a couple of times at the apartment building he lived in for over 30 years and saw what a beautiful job he did with his maintaining the yard, the flowers and plants that he put in and took such care of, and the way the other tenants depended on him to take care of every little thing they were having a problem with. He was a deeply religious person and most of his spare time was spent watching and listening to religious shows. He lost faith with his Catholic Religion to an extent as many of us have over the revelations that have come out in the news, but his core belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ never faltered as shown in how he treated others. We treasured Gary and will miss him terribly. We appreciate all the updates that his Sister-in-law Sharon has given us as to Gary's medical happenings, and hope that she knows that we know and appreciate all she has undertaken on Gary's behalf in his waning years that came at a physical and mental strain. She did it out of love for her late husband's brother and never questioned the role she played. Love to both Gary and Sharon, Robert and Linda Lockhorn
