BOYD WAGGONER Obituary

BOYD WAGGONER Allen Boyd Waggoner passed away on February 22, 2023. He was born in Belton, Texas on January 28, 1936 to Allen Fain Waggoner and Princess Boyd Waggoner. Boyd was the middle of three sons. The family moved to Temple when he was in eighth grade. Boyd's first job when he was in the eighth grade was delivering newspapers in Bell County on his Harley Davidson 125cc motorcycle. After graduating from Temple High School Boyd accepted a scholarship to study and play football at Southern Methodist University. After earning a business degree, Boyd entered SMU law school and served as President of the SMU Law Students Association his senior year. Boyd began his law career in 1962 at Strasburger & Price in downtown Dallas where he became a partner in the firm. After 17 years Boyd struck out on his own and "changed sides" becoming a plaintiffs attorney. Boyd enjoyed working alongside his younger brother Joe, who worked as a Private Investigator at the firm. Boyd recovered over $1 million for his clients over fifteen times. During his sixty-year career as an attorney Boyd served as President of the Dallas Young Lawyers Association, the Dallas Trial Lawyers Association and was voted a Texas Super Lawyer. Boyd enjoyed coaching his kids and grandkids in YMCA sports. In his fifties Boyd learned to play guitar and studied Ranch Management at Texas Christian University. Boyd was a lifelong fan of the SMU Mustangs, attending hundreds of football games and served a term as President of the SMU Lettermen's Association. Boyd was an avid hunter and fisherman, and particularly enjoyed hunting quail with his bird dogs. In 2000 Boyd became a cattle rancher moving onto the ranch in Stephenville, Texas and re-located his law practice to a building on the town square. Boyd was elected in 2004 to the Board for the Middle Trinity Groundwater Conservation District, and later served as Chairman of the Board. Boyd moved into town in 2014 to run for office, serving on the Stephenville City Council. After serving the community Boyd grew restless, and at age 82 became a restauranteur opening his "Burger Joint" in Stephenville. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Hal Fain. He is survived by his son Allen Kinsey Waggoner, daughter Leslie Waggoner Marchand, and their mother Mary Strauss Chandler, son in law Michael Marchand, grandchildren Thomas Cromwell, Marisa Cromwell, Olivia Miller, and Christian Marchand. Boyd is also survived by his brother Joe Waggoner. A memorial service will be held at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, March 24th in the chapel at Highland Park Presbyterian Church 3821 University Blvd., Dallas, Texas.

He was the type of person, who is unforgettable; few and far between. I have since thought of him on a regular basis recalling memories of his contagious laugh, strong confidence, and generous spirit.

I am totally shocked and disheartened. Boyd was a dear friend and mentor to me and a skilled rancher. We burned a lot of brush together with his brother Joe. I will always remember his tremendous generosity.

This made me sad to discover. He was a good, strong, principled man with a big heart, who would fight hard for the underdog! Praying for the family; my condolences too.

Boyd and I grew up together in Temple, played football together there, then both attended SMU on football scholarship. He was my first roommate at SMU and we had remained friends forever. Loved him like a brother for all these years. Rest In Peace, my friend.

Boyd was a good friend to our family through two generations. Every 4 years, he contributed to my father's campaign fund, and helped see to it that he never lost. We were privileged to host him at Democrat events at our farm so many times. I grieve for the family and all who loved him.

I met Boyd through the Erath County Democrats in Stephenville. He was a great man. Very friendly and knowledgeable. His "Burger Joint" was awesome. The best hamburgers in Stephenville.

Know Boyd would want to be remembered as one of Don Meredith´s favorite receivers for SMU Mustangs. They had a great time-unique,smart,talented individual.
