Duncan Woods Obituary
April 23, 1946 - March 25, 2025
Duncan McDaniel Woods, a loving husband, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 78. Born on April 23, 1946, in Somerton, Arizona, Duncan lived an interesting life of learning, adventure, and travel.
Duncan achieved his Bachelor's Degree from Arizona State University on September 16, 1969. A proud veteran, Duncan served on active duty in the United States Army from September 17, 1969, to June 21, 1971. After his service, he pursued his academic interests and earned a Master's Degree in Geography from Arizona State University in 1973, a field that became both his profession and lifelong passion. Duncan was the founder and owner of two successful businesses: Phoenix Mapping and Cygnus Graphics. His professional life was a testament to his love of maps,
3-D design, and the art of translating the physical world into visual and tactile experiences. Fluent in both Spanish and German, he worked as a translator of technical books and volunteered as a "reader" for technical publications, providing access to knowledge for the visually impaired.
Beyond his work, Duncan was an adventurer and pursued new experiences and knowledge. He enjoyed hang gliding, photography, reading, museums, and flying. He belonged to several organizations affiliated with these pursuits and made lasting friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence, love of children, and the time he shared with his family and friends.
Duncan is survived by his wife, Jean Wilson Woods; daughter, Sara (Alex) Sulaimani; grandchildren, Ethan, Sonia, and Lorelai Sulaimani; his nieces, Alison Loukeh, Bonnie Woods, and Kathryn Woods; his sister-in-law, Beverly Woods; and several great-nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss his wisdom and sense of humor.
