"Mr. Crate" was my fourth grade teacher at the Bozorth Campus Elementary School in Glassboro NJ, more than 45 years ago. His was a strong guiding force, what a rarity to find a man of such conviction and verve in an elementary school setting.

We met Doug when he and Sally moved into a house on Beamer's Knob in VA. He was such a special person, a total delight to engage in stimulating conversation. I loved his stories about school ~ it was so obvious that he was that teacher we all would love to have for our own or for our children.
We had a place that we had purchased directly across from them. We came there most weekends when our children were young. We so looked forward to watching the hummingbirds come to Sally's feeder while solving world problems (at least dissecting them).
Doug visited us after we moved to VT and my father was here for a visit from CA - we discovered that they were months apart. It was funny I never knew how old Doug & Sally were ~ to us they were ageless. He will live on in our hearts.

I had the honor of being taught by Mr. Crate in 6th grade at Downeast Elementary School during the 1981-1982 school year. He was a tough, but loving teacher who was one of my favorites. He instilled a sense of hard work in all of us that year and that has carried with me since. I have always fondly remembered Mr. Crate and his teaching style stood out in my mind over many of the other teachers I had over the years. I am honored to be able to say I was one of his many students.

Steve,
As one of your Centering Prayer List Friends, I send you my condolences on your loss and my prayers for your family and friends. When I read your father's obituary, I immediately thought of this saying from Jesus, "Suffer the little children to come unto me for such is the kingdom of Heaven." Someone who never "left the fourth grade" is certainly one of God's children, especially at heart.
May God wrap you in the warmth and tenderness of his love.
Peace and blessings,
Jerry Metz

So sorry to lose Doug. Looking at his smiling face in the photo I find myself smiling back and hearing, from far away, that contagious cackle of a laugh. What a great guy!

I am sorry for your loss. I only had the pleasure of knowing Doug for the past two years. He was a very special friend to my mom, Pauline Ingalls. They visited my home many times and I always enjoyed his company. I, and the rest of my family, will truly miss him.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had Mr. Crate for the 4th and the 6th grade. I requested him for 6th grade because I had such a wonderful experience in 4th grade. Mr. Crate understood me when many didn't. He had a big impact on my life. He always believed in my potential and he made sure I knew that.
I went back to visit him for several years after I completed the sixth grade. I wish I had seen him more recently.
I don't know if he kept up with sailing, but when I had him as a teacher it was a passion of his. I hope he did.
I hope his passing was peaceful and I will never forget him.

Please except my condolences on your loss. Mr. Crate was a fantastic teacher and a man of integrity. I had the pleasure of knowing him while he taught at Union Street Junior High School in Bangor.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. He was a great Teacher. I was lucky to have had him for the fourth grade and the sixth grade. I still think of the stories he would tell us 30 years later. My thoughts are with you at this time of sorrow.
