Charlotte Kohler

Charlotte Kohler was born in Richmond, Virginia, on Tuesday, September 16, 1908, the daughter of Edwin Charles and Augusta Bromm Kohler.

She was educated in the Richmond public schools and graduated from Vassar College in 1929. In 1933, she was awarded an M.A. from the University of Virginia and in 1936 a Ph.D.

From then until 1942 she taught at Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now UNC at Greensboro. She then returned to Charlottesville first as managing editor and then editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review, a position she held until she retired in 1975. She then taught at the University until 1979, when she retired as professor emeritus. In 1971, Smith College awarded her an honorary Litt. D. She was a member of the Raven Society (University of Virginia), ODK, and Phi Beta Kappa.

She is survived by several cousins and by a goddaughter, Lindsey Truitt, and her sisters, Sally Truitt and Kendall Barrett, and their mother, Susanne Page.
