John was my sixth grade teacher at Barrington Elementary in the early 60’s. He had a profound influence on my life and set the stage for my own life as an elementary teacher. I taught for 41 years in Upper Arlington and at Otterbein university after public school retirement. I wrote this poem about John .
An Icabod Crane sort of fellow
Crew cut, glasses and a smile.
A tall skeletal frame filling
Barely a rumpled suit.
Packing the arena for a lunchtime checker game
Or waiting in the four square line.
From him I learned gamesmanship,
An understanding presentation of
New Math’s stacks of cubes
And different bases, gave challenges,
Meaning and fun to math.
With a chuckle and a twinkling eye
While tuning us in to the latest tale
Of Andy and Opie,
Or Milo and his Tollbooth
He taught us to strive
For excellence and
Utilize our inner talents
A daily mischievous challenge
Just to earn the right to
“See ya ai ‘3’ “
