Bev Sevier Obituary

Bev Sevier

AMHERST, MA - Bev Sevier, the most gentle, lovely, funny, and beautiful soul, passed away peacefully and easily on Thursday, February 29, 2024, after her very long struggle with Alzheimer's. Her natural beauty and wonderful self remained untouched.

Bev was a special education teacher for over 30 years, almost entirely in Massachusetts. Bev served as a special education teacher at Hawlemont Elementary in Charlemont from 1982–1993, Northfield Elementary for one year, and Mark's Meadow Elementary in Amherst, where she was remained from 1994 to 2010, when the school closed. Bev taught an additional two years at Wildwood Elementary, retiring in 2012. Bev continued to tutor students with special needs privately for another 5 years or so.

Born in Baltimore to Horace Sevier and Kay (Meyer) Sevier, Bev graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1970, attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. After moving to NY in 1973, graduated with her B. A. from City College of New York in 1976, and in 1981, Bev received her master's degree in special education from San Francisco State University. She and her husband Phil moved back to Massachusetts in 1982, and have lived in Amherst since 1994, where Bev taught for 19 years and they raised her incredible daughter.

Bev leaves behind her husband, Phil Rich; their daughter Lily Kaye Sevier; her brothers Big Ken and Jerry Sevier and their wives, Estelle and Melissa Bane Sevier; her three step-brothers, Brad, Little Ken, and T.J., and their wives, Gay, Debbie, and Jenn; her sister-in-law Hilary Rich and husband Claudio; and her closest friends, Marguerite Millard, Marilyn Cohen, Suzanne Chollet, and Cynthia Sirkin (also known as the Baltimore Girls' Club), Alan Serrins (her ice cream buddy), Harold Leibovitz, and Amy Aaron and Pat Jenkins, and a host of other friends.

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with, to laugh with, to learn from, and to enjoy and share life with Bev Sevier. As a fellow teacher, she was the consummate team player, always ready to offer her help, experience and expertise. Her quiet wit was amazing and always made me laugh.
I am very sorry to have lost such a dear close friend. My deepest sympathy and thoughts are with her family at this time. Barbara Kinder
