Cynthia Pomeroy Obituary

Cynthia Robson (Peterson) Pomeroy

Greenfield, MA - Cynthia Robson Pomeroy, 92, died in Greenfield, MA on Thanksgiving Day 2025, surrounded by family and love.

Cindy was born on August 12, 1933, in Glen Ridge, NJ, the daughter of Robson Frank Pomeroy and Katherine Northrup Pomeroy (née Babbitt), and raised in Bloomfield, NJ.

A resident of Greenfield since 2005, Cindy served her adopted community in many ways. She volunteered with the Literacy Project and the Friends of Greenfield Public Library. Her extensive service to Second Congregational Church included leadership in the Pastoral Search Committee that brought Rev. Adam Tierney-Eliot to Greenfield just this year.

A 1955 graduate of Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA, Cindy earned a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Maryland. Teaching was her calling, and she spent many years in classrooms nurturing the curiosity and confidence of learners of all ages. She retired from classroom teaching after fifteen years at Maret School in Washington, D.C.

Then in her late sixties, she served as Associate Director of Children's Resources International, a USAID initiative. In that role, she developed and published a family literacy curriculum and traveled to Pakistan, Qatar, and Oman to train aspiring teachers. She witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education, especially among women who were allowed to receive formal education for the first time in their lives. The experience deepened her conviction that education is the great bridge between cultures and a pathway to opportunity for all.

No child could ask for a better mother than Cindy Pomeroy. Her home was a place of music and laughter, and a sanctuary for young people in need. She never intended to be The Coolest Mom on the Block, but the title came to her naturally and inevitably.

Her guiding principles were clear: Everyone deserves an excellent education. To include people on society's margins is a moral imperative. Spiritual truth is not the possession of any one faith.

A devoted follower of Jesus, she saw grace in the teachings of the Buddha and Mohammed, while lamenting the cruelty sometimes committed in the name of religion. She was ahead of her time as a champion of feminist ideals, welcoming LGBTQ+ persons into church life, and organic gardening.

Late in life Cindy embraced her natural gift for narrative as a professional storyteller, delighting audiences young and old with her humor and imagination. She could find the funny side of almost anything, and laughter was a close companion through every chapter of her life.

Cindy was a lifelong learner, curious and questioning to the end. She taught her offspring to love and serve, to trust in family, and how to squeeze several great meals out of a single Thanksgiving turkey.

Her heroes included Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, and Nelson Mandela. Among her many muses she counted Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Winslow Homer, and A.A. Milne.

Cindy is remembered for her wit, warmth, and deep faith in the goodness of people. She believed that a well-told story could open hearts and serve as a balm.

She is survived by her four children: Joy Peterson Heyrman (Jack) of Batesville, VA; John Peterson of Greenfield, MA; Andrew Peterson (Lelane Schmitt) of Baltimore, MD; and Elizabeth Peterson (Mark Seibold), also of Greenfield. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, and one great-grandchild, all of whom she cherished.

Her marriage to Tom Peterson ended in divorce.

Cindy's wide circle of beloved friends included her "Merry Marys" women's group, Centering Prayer, several book clubs, writing group, water aerobics class at the Franklin County YMCA, and her friends of all ages at Second Church.

Her family thanks the community of caregivers who looked after her in her later years, with special thanks to Tammy Johnson, her helper since 2009, and to the caring and loving staff at Pioneer Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.

Burial took place in an intimate ceremony at Highland Woods Natural Burial Ground in Montague, MA. A Celebration of Life is planned for next spring.

Donations in Cindy's name may be made to the Friends of the Greenfield Public Library.

Ms. (Peterson) Pomery was my kindergarten teacher, at the K-12 school Maret. She was the teacher a child will remember forever (I do) and that a parent could only dream of having for their child. I can't imagine a better way to have started my own educational journey than in her kindergarten cottage. Her warmth, kindness, laughter and joy of stories - the reading, writing and telling was an inspiration to so many students. And the pleasure of being at a K-12 school is that as I grew up I continued to benefit from that smile. I'm truly wowed to now learn what she did after leaving Maret. And I'm thrilled to know that she shared her warmth and stories beyond our little campus - so far beyond. The world is a better place because she was in and I will always remember her fondly. My condolences to her family. May her memory be for a blessing.

Just one of the many, many students from Maret that were blessed to have shared a world with, and began expanding and enriching our worlds through her joyous heart and captivating ways of helping us connect to the world around us, as well as each other. The annual chorus from across the parking lot of 'Misssssssus Petersooooooooon' was a daily thing. We would not budge until we saw her wave that it was ok to run, with her ever welcoming smile calling us back to our home on campus.

She crafted us in ways myriad and majestic, bringing forth not just the rote intellectual (which nevet felt ordinary or mechanical) but also our emotions and wonder at life, truly helping begin to form us into who we would become years from then.

From all of those at Maret, our love and memories to her family. When we can next, we shall share a bowl of stone soup with our family, as she did with us.

Ms. Peterson (as she then was) was my kindergarten teacher at Maret almost forty years ago. I feel so lucky to have had her; I cannot imagine a better kindergarten teacher. She was warm, wise, imaginative (eg hundreds boards), and outstanding at providing kids with strong educational fundamentals. I remember her story-telling to this day. It isn't nostalgia when a teacher really was that wonderful. My condolences to her family and friends.

I met Cindy at Dumbarton United Methodist Church in Washington and we worshipped together for over 2 decades. I loved being with her, laughing with her, learning from her and listening to her amazing storytelling. No one forgets Cindy, she has left an indelible mark in all she met, a mark full of acceptance, kindness and a gleaming smile. May you rest peacefully, dear Cindy.

Cindy was always gracious and gifted. Inspired by her unshakable faith she was the first to volunteer for projects that uplifted us all. One always felt nourished when in her presence. Her love for family and friends defined her. I feel blessed to have known her.

We had the privilege of living next door to Cindy on Madison Circle from 2017-2021. We could not have asked for a better neighbor. I always knew it would be a good day, if I happened to come out onto the porch while Cindy was rocking on hers. She was always willing to take the time to share a story, a laugh, and the blueberries that grew in the patch between our houses. We also enjoyed playing with and scritching the ears of her sweet pup, Milo, even if he wasn´t always fan of our dogs. Cindy was a delightful human with a beautiful soul and she will be much missed.

I am so glad to have gotten to know Cindy, even if only for a few short years. I'll remember her sparkle and wit, and her deep wisdom about life.

For someone I've know all my life, I'm not sure how to start. For most of my life, I knew Cindy as a nephew knows his aunt. She was always fun to be with and a bit more to the wild side than my mother or my other aunt (her sisters). Storytelling and an out of the ordinary perspective are things I really remember. I think the more important part of my relationship with Cindy was the last 10 years or so of her life and the last five years or so of the lives of my parents. Cindy was huge for me to lean on as my mother, then my father, passed. Being able to talk to someone who knew them both so well and whose empathy seemed to know no bounds meant the world to me. Also in this period was the time to talk candidly and forthrightly about both our lives as older people. I am so thankful for all my conversations with her; I know I will miss them going forward. Cindy was a wonderful person whose memory will always be very, very special to me.

My Aunt Cindy was such an influence. She supported me throughout the many chapters of my life --- as her life also had many 'chapters'. Loving, supportive and fun. Will miss her dearly

Cindy will be missed by all of us here at the Greenfield Public Library. She was a joy to work with, and she lit up the building when she was here. We all greatly appreciated her work as a member of the Friends.
