George Daniel Harrison

George Harrison Obituary

Published by Stevens Mortuary - Knoxville on Dec. 9, 2004.
Army Specialist Harrison, George Daniel—age 22 of Knoxville, made the ultimate sacrifice for his country on December 2, 2004, while proudly serving in Mosul, Iraq. Daniel was assigned to the 293rd Military Police Company. He lost his life coming to the aid of his fellow soldiers. He will always be our hero.

Daniel graduated from Carter High School in 2001. He attended Pellissippi State Community College. He worked at Sears, Wolf Camera, Lift Truck Sales, and Ed Financial before joining the Army on February 19, 2003.

Daniel, our first-born son, was very precious to us. When Daniel was just a few weeks old, he learned to smile—an infectious smile that stayed with him throughout his life. It was a smile that will always be engraved on our hearts. Daniel’s enthusiasm and love for life touched many people.

Daniel’s death is an inconceivable loss to our family. However, this loss strengthens the bond of love we feel for each of you. The Word of God tells us in John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Daniel accepted Christ at an early age. Greeting him in heaven are his maternal grandparents, George and Evah Vannoy and his uncle, Brad Vannoy.

Daniel is survived by his loving parents, Doug and Kim Harrison; devoted younger brother, Joshua Harrison; great-grandmother, Amanda Harrison; grandmother, Alice Maples; grandfather and step-grandmother, Daniel and Carolyn Harrison; uncles and aunts, Barry and Tammi Bowling, Bill and Suzanne Gann; uncles, Geoff Vannoy, Greg Vannoy; cousins, Christi Bowling, Zack Bowling, and Carey Anne Gann.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2004 in the Cruze Center at Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. with Dr. Tony Crisp and Mr. Steve Loope officiating.

Friends will meet at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 13, 2004 for interment at Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, Northshore Drive and Lyon’s View Road. Full military honors will be bestowed by the 2nd Brigade, 502nd INF REGT, Fort Campbell, Kentucky 101st Airborne Division. Honorary pallbearers will be Bradley Davis, Dustin Davis, Patrick Mebust, Paul McMillian, Matt Vann, and SPC Frank Villarreal.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriner’s Hospital in care of Kerbela Temple, 315 Mimosa Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37920.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know George, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

It's so hard to believe that we have both lost a son around the same time and didn't know until things were over.I understand your pain and your greif. I still have times that I cry all day long. God has blessed us with so much that we take for granted. He knew our angles were needed at home. I love you and if you can please get in touch with me.

Dan and I were in Basic Training together and then followed eachother to Ft. Stewart. He was my football buddy. Dan was a huge Tennessee fan and I am a huge Miami fan. We would drive out to one of the post lakes and have a few beers questioning where life is taking us. Never did I believe we would be on such different paths. My family and I,thought he was a hillarious soul and a joy to talk with. He is always on my mind and in my heart. I am getting a beautiful tattoo in remembrance of him and the good times we shared. You will forever be missed.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

It has been about a year and a half since we all lost a good friend but there are days when it feels like yesterday. Dan was one of the people who I could always talk to when i was having a bad day and he could cheer me up whether it be his smile or the things he said. He touched alot of peoples lives and i know everybody who served with him and the people who had the honor of meeting him will always remember the sacrifice he as well as you family has made.

Dan, Kim, Doug, and Josh,

Where do i begin? Dan was my best friend. He was a great person with a huge heart. He had so many things he wanted to accomplish in life. He touched everyones heart who had the privilage to meet him. I am a better person for knowing him. I only wish my wife and daughter had the chance to know him. While in Iraq we would watch videos of my newborn daughter together and laugh. He loved kids he would always touch the t.v. screen and say I just wanna pinch her fat little cheeks. I will never forget the time he walked in and I was watching a video of my daughter and it switched to my wife breast feeding her. He yelled and covered his eyes and laughed out loud and then felt obliged to show me his boob. He said " I feel like i owe you that" we laughed so hard! I owe my life to Dan. Unfortunately he took my spot in the gunners turret that day. I said what are you doing, he replied you drive. I replay those few minutes over in my head at least a couple time everyday and think could I have done something different? It should of been me and I am sorry. We will meet again Dan and all of us will finish our game of D&D. Thank you Dan for being the greatest person i have ever known. I tell my daughter some times I wish you could of known Dan. He never meet her or wasnt related but he would of loved her he was just that kind of person. He would have been a big part in her life as well, I am sure of it. Kim, Doug and Josh I am sorry for not posting something sooner but what do you say? How do you say it? This is a hard subject for me to talk about. Dan I love you brother and I will never forget you!

Hello Kim, Doug, Josh I was Dan's Squad Leader In Iraq. I just want to say that I am so sorry for your lost. That day runs through my thoughts just about every night i go to bed or when I kissing my son goodnight. It troubles me knowing that you no longer have that privilege to do so with your son. I do know that I am a better person for knowing him as are the rest of the Soldiers who have served beside him. Dan I was one of your Leaders but I thank you for Letting me your friend. I will See you again.

I had the honor of serving in Iraq with Dan. He was a unique person. No matter what we endured over there at the end of the day he would smile and it was contagious, and some of those days I didn't think I was capable of feeling good. He lifted the spirits of every person he came into contact with. He paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us and for that he is a Hero. I miss him and I am proud to have served with him.

Hi, Kim, Doug and Josh. Ill never forget that day it was the worst day of all our lives. We lived together in the same room with Jarvis and Weatherford, and there is alot you can learn about a person within a year. He was one of the most friendly, and honest men I have ever met. I guess you could say we became brothers that year, and I had the honor of being by his side during his last days before he went to Heaven. And there is nothing I wouldnt do for his family. Kim, Doug and Josh I am truly sorry and I would relive those days anytime just for you guys. Love you guys

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I believe that you will remember me as pastor of Thorn Grove Baptist Church during the time that your family lived in our community.

I had already grieved at the sad news of the death of your son, and later when the obituary was printed, realized that you were a member of the Vannoy family whom I remember with great fondness.

I had seen Brad just a short while before his tragic death, and was in great sorrow. Then. not too long ago I saw where your mother had passed. When sorrow comes to those whem we have known in former years, we are left very sad. That is how I feel at this moment.

My health is not good and I am not able to call at funerals, etc. presently. Nevertheless, my prayers and good wishes are with you. As a veteran of the WW II, I am filled with great feelings for those who in this present conflict are losing their lives and we are losing such choice young men.

May God bless you in this time and be your everpresent help in your troubles. With continuing love,

Our prayers are with you. Daniel was in our Sunday School class at Roseberry when he was in about 3rd or 4th grade. We had eleven girls, and he was the only boy. We still remember his smile. I think he was proud to be the only boy there. His smile will make heaven more beautiful. If we can do anything, let us know.

My prayers for Daniel's spirit and for each of his family members and friends -- may you find peace and comfort in the memory of his life, his gorgeous smile, and the twinkle in his eyes.

To the family of Army Specialist Harrison:

Your son made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the very freedoms we value so much, especially the freedom to worship our Lord without fear of retribution. For this, I am grateful and mourn your loss. No words can be enough to get you through your grief; however, God will provide all of your needs and sustain you throughout the days to come.

Sincerely, Sue Dunlap

My entire family wishes to extend its sympathy to your family. Although we did not know your son, he is part of us. We are a retired Air Force family, and my father is a WW11 vet. Your son's service to our country makes him a part of a large extended family who honor him on this day.

Your loss is so personal that no one can know how you feel. Please know, however, that there are others who feel the loss of your son and can only hope that your burden is somewhat eased by knowing that it is shared by others.

Your son's life assures him a place with the Lord. He is a hero in so many ways, most importantly in his acceptance of Jesus and living his life for Him.

We honor Daniel and honor and thank you.

Sincerely,

Jim and Carmin Simerly
