Well Doug, another year. 18 years now you've been gone. Seems like just yesterday I got the call from mom. Dad's gone now. I picture you two together in Heaven playing a ping pong match that sounds like two grizzlies fighting and God yelling "Are those two at it again!!" Makes me smile when I remember those matches in the basement. You are truly a hero and truly missed everyday. Love and miss you!

Hello Major Sloan and family. Whenever Van posts (or anyone for that matter) I get a notification. It's been 11 years since my initial comment. I've never forgotten y'all. My son did make it back from Afghanistan in one piece, but he has been damaged by PTSD. At least he's home, married, doing well. He served honorably.
Sloan family...this old sailor will always remember and honor your brother, son, family. Rest in peace, Major. We have the watch.

Yesterday was Memorial Day and I wanted to write a note to tell you how proud we are of the soldier you were. I speak with Dylan about you often and keep you alive in him. His room is decorated with your awards your dad gave him, pictures of you and the framed awards the Army Liaison provided him after your death.
Is it crazy but he is sooooo much like you. Sometimes it makes me nuts (he is constance junior!). He looks like you too! He is a great kids and I know you are watching over him.

Somehow, the "Drudge Report" chose to put a picture of Major Sloan's marker, front & center today, Memorial Day, 2012. That led me to dig deeper and find out about Major Sloan. What I have learned is that he was a true leader, a professional soldier, and a man that cared about his troopers. He was also loved and admired by his family and friends. He has left an enduring legacy, and I am touched by his story this Memorial Day. My son is in the U.S. Army and is stationed at Fort Benning. He is leaving for Afghanistan very soon. I fear for him, but he freely chose to serve. Thank you for your dedicated and faithful service to our country, Major Sloan. Rest in peace. You will not be forgotten.

Our families were stationed in Kodiak together, I recently tried to locate you just to say hi and see what you are up to, and was deeply saddened to learn of your death. To the family of MAJ Sloan, I was a student of his when I was at IOBC. I was injured and hung around for a while doing odd jobs until the Battalion XO put me in the Operations shop. He was a great Platoon Instructor and I learned a lot from him. However, it wasn't until I graduated and saw him in the halls while I was "hanging out" at Battalion that I really got to know him. He was always smiling and cracking jokes with me and generally made me feel better about my situation (being injured and unable to do what I wanted). I am stationed at Benning now and I am working on a Project for the Commanding General in which I am creating inspiration posters for students on post. I have made a poster of MAJ Sloan (I don't use his first name because he was always my superior) that I will make sure goes up in one of the Brigade classrooms in order to memorialize him. I am terribly sorry for your loss and the Army has become a sadder place without him. Future Officers have no idea what they are missing being unable to serve under him. I would have followed him into combat anywhere. It is still hard to remember him without getting upset.

COL(R)Landry is our guest speaker talking at my BN Ball on 9 Oct. Of course his speech is of you. The most phenomenal company commander who he ever had the priviledge to serve with. How the elders gathered together and mourned as they knelt beside and gave praise at the gentle giant with an immeasureable heart who brought together villages and did so much to heal a broken nation. It was the largest gathering of tribes that region has ever known. You transcended borders that is just the way you were. It will be like this always.This has been a tough time but we will always honor your memory. Our youngest son, little Dougie is growing so much. He will know so much about his Uncle that he was named after and what a hero he is. We love and miss you very much!

To the Family of Doug Sloan:
I was in my first assignment as a young 2LT assigned to the S3 shop of 1-506 IN at Camp Greaves Korea. He was my immediate supervisor. He was always quick with a joke or making light of cruddy circumtances. He would hover around you as were opening a package you received in the mail joking, "Did you get anything to eat?" He took time to teach us young LTs how to do our jobs. Of the staff officers I worked with he was one of the best at teaching us what to do, we knew how to be Platoon Leaders but we were lost as staff officers and he showed us the way. I havent seen him in six years and I still miss him greatly. My condolences.

MAJ Douglas Sloan is a great man. I served with him in Afghanistan. I was with him through thick and thin. No words can describe how awesome he was as leader. There was not one day he did not make me laugh. He was like the big brother I never had. I think of him daily.

I served with Doug off and on since 1996 from Ft. Benning to Camp Greaves, Korea. In Korea, those of us on battalion staff called him "Sloth". He could bring you to tears with his humor. A true friend and comrade. I still have an email from him dated FEB 06 and a quote from that email follows: "Oh well, I leave for OEF VII in a week. That is fun. I've been in command for 18 months and cannot get fired. I'm trying though. I'm still married and the wife is pregnant with our 3rd monster." Family man and solid Soldier. You are missed my friend.
