Junius Jones Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Aug. 28 to Aug. 29, 2008.
JONES, LTC (ret.) Junius "Jay" Linwood Jr., 74, went to be with the Lord August 25, 2008. Following an heroic battle with cancer, he died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones. Jay was a career Army officer, serving his country with distinction first as an aviator and later as a logistics director and instructor. His tours of duty included Europe and the Far East, with a tour in the Viet Nam conflict. He was the recipient of multiple military awards and commendations including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. Jay attended Wake Forest University and received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Nebraska (Omaha). He also earned a Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University. He was an active member of Williamsburg Baptist Church, serving on and chairing several committees. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #6 Williamsburg, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1115, Hillsville, and TCAA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Junius Linwood Jones Sr., and Myra Fales Jones; and sister, Myra Copeland. Jay is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Alice; daughters, Debbie Jones (Johnny) of Hopewell, Pam Nicholson (Bart) of Fort Mill, S.C.; son, Jay (Claudia) of Greensboro, N.C.; and grandchildren, Brantley Nicholson, Daniel Jones, Megann Jones, Brady Nicholson, Cory Nicholson, Joshua Jones, Cameron Jones; and honorary grandson, Alan (Jiexin) Lian of Seattle, Wash. He is also survived by his sister, DeLena Browder of Virginia Beach and numerous nieces and nephews. Jay's influence was far-reaching - from his loving devotion to his family to his deep faith, wise counsel, and steadfast friendship. He will be greatly missed in so many circles. The family wishes to thank Dr. John Paschold and staff of Virginia Oncology Associates and the 4th floor nurses, aides, and rehab unit personnel at Williamsburg Sentara Hospital. We also thank the therapists and nurses of Sentara Home Care and Hospice Care. We are so grateful for the loving care you have given our family for the last 18 months. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Williamsburg Baptist Church, 227 Richmond Road, Williamsburg. Inurnment will be in the church's memorial garden. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Williamsburg Baptist Church and the American Cancer Society. Nelsen Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences may be registered at www.nelsenfh.com.

Dear Alice,

Bobbye and I were so very sad to learn that Juno had passed away. The four of us had so many wonderful get-togethers over the years. You and Juno were always that "special couple" and the two of you kept a perfect marriage and family going through all the years from the 1950's onward..

May God be with you,

Hello Alice,
I was so sorry to learn of Jay's death. You have my deepest sympathy.
you may not remember me. Jay and I were advisors on accompanied tours in Korea. We both worked for LTC Clearwaters in Pusan. I remember well a wonderful weekend Cindy and I spent with you and Jay in Chinhae. We went sailing in the afternoon and in the evening there was a party and we were introduced to your "parades". We had a great time.
Again, my deepest sympathy.

Alice, Little Sister, we have lost my Big Brother after a valiant fight. Time will not heal the emptiness it leaves in our lives but our hearts are filled with all the fond memories that we share with having known Jay as a husband, father, grandfather and a friend. He served his country, church and friends with pride and responsibility throughout his life. We are all better for having shared his life.
