Philip Perdue Obituary

PERDUE, Philip Sutherland Sr., 92, of Richmond, Va., died August 22, 2008. Mr. Perdue was born in Chester, Va., March 3, 1916, to Philip Eddie Perdue and Mildred Sutherland Perdue. He attended Chester High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1938. He served in the Coast Artillery and the Army Air Corps, attaining a rank of Major. During WWII, Mr. Perdue served as a B-17 Pilot and Squadron Commander with the 8th Air Force in the European Theatre of Operations. After the war, he was a founding member of the Real Estate Company of Kinsey Perdue McCall, Inc. with one of his early projects, the surveying and appraisal for the development of Lake Gaston. Mr. Perdue was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mildred Spencer Perdue and Helen Fern Perdue Manwiller. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pattie Anne Burgess Perdue; two daughters, Pattie Perdue Grubbs and her husband, Jerry, of South Boston, Va., and Robin Perdue Wadkins and her husband, Tom, of Richmond, Va.; as well as a son, Philip Sutherland Perdue Jr., M.D. and his wife, Tammy Oakley Perdue, of Greenville, N.C. Mr. Perdue was also blessed with seven grandchildren. Mr. Perdue was a founding member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Chesterfield County. A dedicated Hokie, he enjoyed big band music and dancing and was a member of the Southampton Cotillion and the Bachelor's Club. He derived great pleasure working outdoors and could often be found planting and tending the many plants and flowers surrounding his home. He was a devoted father and husband, and was happiest when surrounded by his family and grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday, September 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., in Richmond, Va. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, Va. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or American Alzheimer's Association or to Virginia Tech.
