William Russell Murphy

MURPHY, William Russell, 83, of Merry Point, died September 8, 2008. Mr. Murphy was elected in 1971 to the Virginia House of Delegates and served for two terms, during which his bill for the School of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Polytechnic Institute was passed, enabling the establishment of the school. In 1976, he was elected by the General Assembly as General District Court Judge for Prince William County. Judge Murphy was awarded the William and Mary Alumni Medallion for distinguished service to the college in 1996. He was also appointed to the Board of Visitors for William and Mary. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucy Venable Jones Murphy, formerly of Blackstone; two daughters, Margaret Murphy Sadler and husband, Henry Philip Sadler, of Louisa, Lucy Murphy Boush and husband, Mark Granville Boush, of Richmond; three grandchildren, Henry Philip Sadler III and wife, Rachel, of Richmond, Elizabeth Sadler Rabb and husband, Russell, of Culpeper, Mark Granville Boush Jr. of Richmond; one great-grandson, Russell Linwood Rabb IV of Culpeper. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, September 11, at Pohick Church in Lorton, with interment in the church cemetery.
