James N. Settle

SETTLE, James N., 79, of Alberta, Va., died Friday, November 14, 2008 in Greenville, S.C. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn S. Settle; son, Kemp N. Settle and wife, Kaye, of Pickens S.C.; granddaughter, Jessica Ford and husband, Dan, of Stafford, Va.; brother, Dr. W.K. Settle and wife, Bobbie, of Sanford, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and granddog, Norwood. At the time of his retirement, he was Dean of Humanities and The Arts at Hunter College of the City University of New York. During his career, Mr. Settle worked for a number of years for the American Council of Learned Societies, a non-profit educational endowment society based in New York City. Mr. Settle attended Wake Forest College, then in Wake Forest, N.C., and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his Ph.D. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, Va. A memorial service will then be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 704 Edwards Road, Greenville, S.C. 29615, the Greenville Humane Society, 328 Furman Hall Road, Greenville, S.C. 29601, or a charity of your choice.
