CARROLL, Fred Herbert, 81, of Varina, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2008. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Corene Carroll; and his six children, Raymond (Terri), Frances, Lelia (Robert) Lampkin, Marvin, Winston, and James (Kelly); 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. Fred was a carpenter most of his life. Fred attended Fort Lee Baptist Church and was a life member of the Richmond Motorcycle Club. Additionally, he was the last of 11 siblings. Fred was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. His family will receive friends Sunday, November 30, 2008 and Monday, December 1, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 11 a.m. at Fort Lee Baptist Church, 2727 Charles City Road, Richmond, Va. 23231, with interment to follow with military honors at Washington Memorial Park, Sandston. Contributions in Mr. Carroll's memory may be made to the Fort Lee Baptist Church Memorial Fund or the Alzheimer's Association of Richmond.

Uncle Fred was one of the best story tellers - my mom said he had the Carroll gift of gab. When I was little, I wasn't sure if that was good or bad - all I knew was that when he started to tell a story, you had better take a deep breath because soon you'd be laughing so hard you wouldn't be ABLE to breath at all. Cokie and family, you're all in my prayers.

I was very sorry to hear about Fred passing away. I will always remember Fred and Papa laughing and having a good time at the Carroll reunions. Its never easy especially around holidays and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone.
