Jean Shannon Elder Carroll

Jean Shannon Elder Carroll died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Following a private graveside ceremony, a celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 12 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, with Pastor Randy Goudeau officiating. A reception and visitation with family members will be held at Rose-Neath immediately after the 2:00 p.m. service.

Jean was born May 28, 1925, in Marshall, TX, and celebrated her 100th birthday this past May. She graduated in 1943 from C.E. Byrd High School and in 1947 from Centenary College with a B.A. in Art. While a student at Centenary, Jean taught dance classes for Lillian Stovall at the Stovall School of Dance to help pay for her college tuition. She joined the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, coached the college Kickline, and was elected Campus Beauty, Most Popular, and Miss Kollege Kapers.

In 1947, Jean married her husband of 67 years, Dr. W. H. (Son) Carroll. Together they raised their two daughters, Candy Carroll Peavy (Pat) and Shannon Carroll Sale (Frank).

Jean was known throughout Shreveport for her love of all things dance, including tearing up the dance floor at local dances (until her knees wore out)! She choreographed and coached many of the early Shreveport Medical Auxiliary Doctor’s Day events, and taught ballroom dancing to her peers in her home studio. In the early 1980’s, Jean joined the aerobic dance movement and taught hundreds of women how to exercise in an aerobic dance class. And then, in her senior years and as her students aged, she created chair exercise classes to music for seniors in local church gymnasiums.

Jean was extremely outgoing—full of energy, had a wonderful sense of humor, and never met a stranger! She had a very soft spot for animals, especially dogs and cats, and was never without at least one pet in her home. Although she would say she hated to cook, she did enjoy throwing large parties. She also became very accomplished with a shotgun and won numerous trophies in local skeet shooting competitions.

Jean was loved and cherished by her family and was an inspiration and wonderful role model for her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, and parents, Henry Pope Elder and Anna Shannon Elder, her brother William Henry Elder, and her sister, Anita Elder McAdams. She is survived by her two daughters, 3 grandchildren, Henry L. V. Bond, Lauren Michaels Wolfe (Jason), and William Wynton Michaels, step-grandson Michael Thompson Peavy, 3 great-grandchildren, Sloane and Cohen Wolfe and Presley Michaels, and 2 step-great-grandchildren, John Patrick Peavy and Michael James Peavy.

Honoring Jean as pallbearers will be Henry Bond, Dr. Bill Gallmann, Al Hand, William Michaels, Mike Peavy, and Jason Wolfe.

The family is deeply grateful to Dr. Paul Guidry for his excellent medical care, the Regional Hospice nurses and aides, and our wonderful caregivers: Rosita Thomas, Constance Bryant, Linda Semien and Ezette Bates, true angels all.
