It is New Year's Eve Night and unfortunately I was out of town for Mrs. H's funeral. This is the night that will always be ingrained in my memory as the night to go to the Houghton's House. Mr and Mrs H. would always put up with the worst group of miscreants like me who would descend on their house with cherry bombs and other crazy things and celebrate the New Year.
And when it was not New Years we loved to just descend on the house and see what trouble we could get into. I will never forget the many gator hunts we took from the Houghton's dock and the time that we once took a little gator in a net and held it dripping over the bed while Mr. H told us to get out of there while Mrs H hid under her covers.
Mrs H loved to stay up and talk with us crazies, but her husband's voice would call from the bedroom... "Gloria, it is time to go to bed." Eventually she would leave for bed and with the life of the party gone, we would head for our own home.
One trick I learned from Mrs H was when people stopped in to visit and brought you cheese from Wisconsin, you should immediately open it up and have them sit down and eat it with you so you can get it used up.
And then of course there was Mrs H's trip to Communist Poland with my Mother. As she said at my Mother's service in the Mayflower, "We were bringing Polish hams to the Poles".
My Mom and Mrs H. are probably busy up there somewhere bringing something to someone but looking back at us and smiling at what a good job they did raising us.

Gloria inspired me like no other teacher in my life. She encouraged me to be creative, to think outside the box even as she defined the dimensions of the “box”, and explained why the box was relevant in the first place. My life-long passion for cogent, intelligent, and poetic writing found its genesis in her classroom. These are tools I have strived to pass along to my children and to any I mentor. For me, the gift of critical thinking and expression are Gloria’s greatest legacy to her students – even those students who will never have the privilege of knowing their teacher directly.
Oh yeah, and the mead wasn't bad either!

Dear Frank, an addenda:
" to be or not to be?"
Gloria certainly answered this question in the affirmative!
Gloria's 'being' was chock-full of wondrous and diverse interests:
From devoted wife to dynamic teacher,
From super mom to super friend,
From Shakespeare to Dickens,
From Queen Victoria to Galileo's wife,
From Wedgwood china to Teddy Bears,
From playing Bridge to sailing under the Tower Bridge,
From traveling the world to the Mayflower...
Gloria was an active, with a capital 'A', player on the world stage.
Gloria's positive outlook, imagination, and gusto brightened the lives of countless thousands. Only wish that all of her tour-de-force "Book Reviews" had been video-recorded for future generations to view an effortless, joyful, learning experience!
Winter Park's brightest star has now joined her celestial sisters-
Where Gloria is now organizing some educational, fun activity...
God bless. Randy Moore

Dear frank and the houghton family, please accept my deepest sympathies. Gloria will always be remembered by those who have had the privilege of being in her presence. She was a truly gifted individual who had a tremendous impact on the lives of her many friends and her students. It would take a book; no, several books to adequately describe Gloria's uniqueness. Generosity toward others, and energetic pursuit of life. My memories of Gloria and her great husband,Frank, and their collective zest for life will always be cherished. Gloria's motto of "linger not" was surly realized in her personal actions and is great advice to all. Thank you dear Gloria for all the special times we shared and for being such a kind, loyal, and loving friend. God Bless. R. Moore

Mrs. Houghton was my favorite teacher! She was dramatic, inspirational and she really knew how to get kids to learn. I remember so many projects that we completed in her class: making mead and designing a room were two of my favorites. College humanities was a breeze after Mrs. Houghton's class. My thoughts and prayers are for Mrs. Houghton and her family at this time.

"O call back yesterday, bid time return" so that I might say goodbye to my teacher. She taught so she would relive her passion in the classics and made it come alive for us. How can you forget the meade? David Copperfield? Writing? New York? London? Shakespeare? "Fair thoughts and happy hours attend on you," I would say to her who ignited a tiny flame of fondness for Trinity, the classics, and made us believe we could carry on the same. We love you, we will miss you, our Mary Poppins of TP.

Mrs. Houghton (as I knew her at Trinity Prep) didn't just teach us to appreciate the humanities... and that was no small task. Through her thoughtful, bold, creative and joyful demeanor, she encouraged us to live fully and kindly, and to savor every delicious detail. I really looked up to her and feel incredibly fortunate to have been her student. I know I carry some of her spirit in me, as does everyone she touched. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Dear Houghton Family and Friends,
I and my brother Peter knew Gloria Houghton because she and her husband Frank were very good friends of my parents Wilkie and Annetta Lane. The Houghtons often visited our home in Maitland and we so enjoyed their company. They would share wonderful stories about their many travels. Sometimes they traveled with our parents to Europe and the interesting and funny escapades that went on during those trips were truly great.
Gloria Houghton will be remembered by me as I person who was very engaging and always easy to speak to, no matter the subject. I particularly enjoyed speaking with her about history, my own travels and the politics of the day. Otis her constant companion was also always involved in the mix. Our Mother Annetta was also a high school teacher (Bishop Moore H. S. Latin) and Gloria was a tremendous peer and colleague for my Mother to have.
Certainly I can say for myself and my brother that it was a great source of joy to know that our parents had such a great friend as Gloria, and of course Otis too.
Intelligence, combined with a loving heart and an engaging spirit, that was Gloria Houghton.
Gloria Houghton was a defender of the Faith and I am most certain is being well recieved in the Heavenly Realm.
May God Bless her soul now and for all eternity! Amen.

Mrs. Houghton was everything that you have all said on these pages. She cared, she was passionate about her career, and devoted to both her students and the art of learning. AND she continued to be great company and inspirational in every way. I was fortunate to see her at The Mayflower from time to time and it always took me back to high school, because there she was, just a little grayer and shorter than when she taught us!
She will ivein the hearts of many -- the ultimate immortality.

How blessed those of us are who attended Trinity, and had such wonderful people, like Mrs. Houghton in our lives! My favorite memory of her is from the Shakespeare festival. She had great passion and enthusiasm for the English Literature she taught, and inspired us to have the same. Caroline Webber

I was the Academic Secretary at Trinity when Gloria was a teacher there. I remember so well her favorite perfume - Youth Dew by Estee Lauder. I always knew when she had been in the office because I could smell her fragrance - and her classroom always smelled of Youth Dew as well. She was a beautiful, gracious woman, and a wonderful teacher. My condolences to her family.

Mrs Houghton was a neighbor of my family's in Maitland Shores, and my English teacher for 2 years at Trinity. She was one of my favorite teachers ever. I will always remember when our class put on a performance of David Copperfield and most of us had to play multiple roles, and when she invited our whole class to her home to finish the "novel" we were collectively writing. She was an innovative teacher, but that was such a plus. Cindy Matheny

Gloria Houghton inspired our generation of students at Trinity Prep with both large- and small-scale educational techniques. Her inspirational Shakespeare Festival motivated the entire school in its focus on the classics (not to mention fun with period costumes and food), while her work in the classroom forced us to develop new perspectives and communications skills. I know she continued to follow our activities through alumni events and publications. She thrived not only on the support and love of her wonderful family, but hopefully also on the legacy of her significant contributions to the lives of her former students.
We will all be with you in spirit as you honor your wife and mother’s life (fortunately, as there’s not room for all of us in person!).

I teach because of Gloria Houghton! She led so many students to love the arts and their role explaining history. She (and her sweet husband and wonderful daughter, Debbie) led a group of us on the trip of a lifetime to NYC, across the Atlantic on the QE2 and all of Britain for 4 weeks in 1976. That inspiration led me to be a life-long learner! Thank you Houghton Family for sharing her!

As a young Revenue Agent I was befriended by Gloria and her husband Frank. He had designs upon me as a potential new union member. I had hardly had a chance to meet my new Manager at the time or the other employees. It was sign up for the Union then government saving bonds, then you are a member of the team. Well it wasn't all that long before I was invited to their home for dinner and at that time met Gloria, a most gracious and lovely lady. I also then meet their son Ken, and daughters Betsy and Debbie. One could tell early on Gloria was not just the average person. She didn't need to relate her accomplishments or background to see class, intellect, and a person of great talent and inner beauty. I was alone in Orlando at the time and their efforts to welcome me to the area and provide me an evening with their family was greatly appreciated. I did not have a chance to see Gloria very often thereafter except at occasional functions. She was however constant in her friendly demeanor and outward interest in those around her. I am pleased that I had the opportunity to know her and be numbered among her acquaintances. I know her large family of children, grand-children, and great grand-children will miss her presence, her affection for them, and the love they shared.
