Andrew Ruppel Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from May 21 to May 23, 2010.

Andrew C. Ruppel

Andrew Charles Ruppel, Professor Emeritus at University of Virginia, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 20, 2010.

He was born on August 9, 1938, in New York City, to Carl Philip and Margaret Emilie Nessel Ruppel.

Andy is survived by his wife of 44 years, Imogene Newman Ruppel. Other survivors are a sister, Joan Minovosky and her husband, Frank, of Leesburg, Florida; a niece, Susan Collins and her husband, Roger; two nephews, Gary Kollmann and his wife, Peggy, and Bruce Kollmann and his wife, Pat; and two great-nieces, Christine Kollmann and Jeanette Klein.

Andy was a Professor of Management Information Technology. During his long tenure at McIntire, he took visiting assignments with NASA in Washington, D.C. and the U.N.'s Atoms for Peace Program in Vienna, Austria. In the fall of 1971, Andy and Jean moved to Charlottesville to begin his 38 year career at the University of Virginia where he was instrumental in the design and occupancy of Rouse Robertson Hall on the East Lawn, the new home of the McIntire School of Commerce. His attention to detail and gentle demeanor led to his involvement in many projects on the grounds of the University.

He served in the United States Army and earned degrees from C.W. Post (B. S. summa cum laude), the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (M.S. in Industrial Management) and the University of North Carolina (Ph. D.).

Jean suggests that memorial gifts be made to Michael Clarke, McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, P.O. Box 400173, Charlottesville, VA 22904 or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Mrs. Ruppel I am sorry for your loss. Mr. Ruppel was the best. He was like a friend. When i was a student at McIntire I would spend many an hour hanging out with Mr. Ruppel especially on fridays when we would have no classes. He was always frank and honest and down to earth and a great listener. I remember he even once told me he loved architecture more than teaching. He always took an interest and cared and even though i dont think he thought too much about himself as a teacher he was good because he cared and showed. I am really sad about hearing the news. He even helped me with a grad school recommendation for engineering and he took an interest in my final project and asked me good thought provoking questions about intermodel transportation using barges in the US. The last time i saw him was when i popped by during grad school i found him in a small room near the 3rd floor at McIntire and he seemed happily envolved more in architecture and things.

He is a really special person and we are all sadden by the news. One of his favorite quotes i remember from class was 'if u torture the data it will talk' and also 'sometimes you have to take a problem by the lapel and make it yours'. one time during a lecture he walked into a closet. Also i remember his interest in german and movies like run lola run and his friendship with Prof. Stewart who i had in goethe in translation. Mr. Ruppel never took himself too seriously and was refreshingly human and just plain wonderful.

anyway Mr. Ruppel was the best. I am sure you knew that. I wish you the best.

god bless you

Jean, I was so shocked to have learned of Andrew passing on. It was wonderful that I had the opportunity to know him more in his later years. He was so good to my parents, and at the time that I was dealing with loosing both of them he gave me tremendous support. It gives me great pleasure to read the wonderful comments from other people. Andrew was a nice cousin and it saddens me knowing that our family has lost another member. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Jean.

Mrs. Ruppel: I had the great honor to know Andy at McIntire while working in the Career Planning office. On my first day there, Andy came by to welcome me and introduce himself which made things easier for me in my new job! He had a low keyed personality but also a great sense of humor! He became one of my favorite faculty members at the Comm School and after I left, would run into him around C'ville and it was always a pleasure. My sincerest sympathies to you and your family.

The news of Andy's passing was a sudden shock and a tragedy. Andy was my host when I came to UVA's McIntire School in 1982 and took me under his wings as a colleague and a friend. The years and ways he used his prime years serving the needs of the McIntire School and the University of Virginia were a shining example of integrity, pride, and professionalism for faculty and staff to emulate. God almighty is the best judge who will reward Andy's soul with goodness and forgiveness and grant it eternal life and peace. I shall miss Andy immensely. My sincerest condolences to Jean and his family all. Elias Awad
