Edward James King

Edward James King, 90, of Lake Monticello, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at his residence.

He was born June 10, 1919, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late James King and Viola Power King. He was the husband of the late Alice Ambrette King.

Mr. King was educated in Brooklyn at the St. Francis Prep School, he and his wife were married on June 20, 1942. During World War II he served in the United States Army Armored Division in France and Germany between 1944 and 1945.

He raised his children in Westbury Long Island where he served on the Board of Appeals for 10 years and a Trustee for three years. He was also active with his children including cub scouts and baseball throughout their childhood. Mr. King owned and operated Krogh's Restaurant in Sparta, New Jersey, and made his career as a Mechanical Engineer for a family owned business, Ambrette Machinery Corporation. In 1981, he retired in Delray Beach Florida, where he served on the board of directors for his condo association and most recently lived at Lake Monticello with his daughter.

He is survived by one son, Edward J. King Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina; two daughters, Missy Dykstra and her husband, George, of Lake Monticello, and Michelle Martin and her husband, Paul, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; five grandchildren, Edward King III, Donna Gaubauer, Austin Martin, Tyler Martin, and Elliott Martin.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment to follow in Culpeper National Cemetery. Pastor Carmon Hartsfield will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 2200 Old Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
