Irving Lee Morris

Irving Lee Morris of Gordonsville, Virginia, died on Monday, May 31, 2010, following an extended illness.

He was born on May 27, 1935, in Louisa County, the son of the late V.A. "Plum" Morris and Effie Rigsby Morris Byrns.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Willis Morris of Gordonsville, Virginia; one son ,Timothy I. Morris; and a granddaughter, Abigail G. Morris of Somerset, Virginia. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, Deborah G. Dandridge; and stepson, Glenn D. Glazebrook; five step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Robert Ballard.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Ann M. Whitby, Edna M. Ballard and Caroline R. Morris; and a stepson, R. Steven Glazebrook.

Irving was a graduate of The Miller School of Albemarle. He was a member of Gordonsville Baptist Church. In the 1960's he served as director of the Jaycees. He was active in Freemasonry and served as the Worshipful Master in Charlottesville Lodge #55 AF&AM in 1984 and 1985. He served the 18th Masonic District as District Deputy Grand Master in 1992 as Treasurer of his lodge for seven years, and as a member of the Keystone Royal Arch Chapter, Allied Masonic Degrees and Scottish Rite of Richmond. Irving also served as a member of the Masonic Corporation of Charlottesville for 17 years. He served in the United States Army from 1958 through 1960.

Additionally he enjoyed genealogy and collecting items of the past. For many years he had an interest in family history, and in recent years many family connections were located. He learned that the Morris family served in virtually all of the wars in which this country was involved. In 1998 he organized a family reunion and was instrumental in having ancestors recognized, by placement of memorial stones, for their contributions to the development of this country. As a part of his family search, he published MORRISLAND, a family newsletter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Miller School of Albemarle, 1000 Samuel Miller Loop, Charlottesville, VA 22903, or the charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Gordonsville Baptist Church with Pastor Wayne Collis officiating.
