Mary Elizabeth Tart West, 59, of Charlottesville, died on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at her residence.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard West.

Mary was born in Dunn, North Carolina, on June 4, 1950, the daughter of Trelloe Barefoot Tart and the late Warren G. Tart.

In addition to her mother, Mary is survived by her two sons, Richard Cullen West, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and David Emory Hilton West, of Charlottesville, Virginia; two sisters, Patty White and her husband, Bobby, of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Nancy Tew and her husband, Ronnie, of Dunn, North Carolina; a brother-in-law and wife, Tommy and Debbie West of Rescue, Virginia; three nephews, Chase Tew, Jennings White, and Stuart West; one niece, Alisha Hamilton; one uncle and five aunts. Mary will also be missed dearly by her many friends.

Mary was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and belonged to their "Women's Bible Study".

Mary received her secondary education from Midway High School in Dunn, North Carolina, a Bachelors of Art degree from East Carolina University and a Masters Degree from The University of Virginia. Mary was an educator for 30 years. She taught in Fluvanna County and Charlottesville City Schools, both in Virginia. Upon retiring, Mary enjoyed consulting for The Underground in downtown Charlottesville.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Christ Episcopal Church, 100 West Jefferson Street, Charlottesville, Virginia. Parking will be available at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home across the street from the church. A reception for friends and family will take place in the church after the memorial.
