Ruth Dixon Bogart

Ruth Dixon Bogart, 91, of Charlottesville, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2010, at Martha Jefferson Hospital as a result of complications from a fall in her home.

She was born on July 12, 1918.

She enjoyed 30 years in Charlottesville living with her daughter and son-in-law, Polly and Tom Thompson, and her beloved granddaughters, Brooke Thompson Michelsen of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and Paige Lee Thompson of Denver. Her son, Peter Bogart and wife Bonnie reside in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Her granddaughter, Jessica Bogart Klohr and her husband, Roger and great-granddaughter, Amelia, reside in Encino, California.

Ruth was a dedicated RN graduating from Lawrence General Hospital Nursing School in 1938. During World War II, she served the American Red Cross as a nurse aiding injured soldiers on troop trains between Savannah, Georgia, and Atlantic City, New Jersey. During one of her trips, she met her husband of 35 years, World War II veteran, Captain Jack Bogart.

While in Charlottesville, Ruth worked as a RN for the University of Virginia Medical Center and Martha Jefferson Hospital. She particularly enjoyed private duty nursing, assisting many Charlottesville families with long term care needs.

Ruth, affectionately known as "Nan", was loved by many friends and neighbors in Charlottesville as well as long-standing family friends from New England. She will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Olivet Presbyterian Church, 2575 Garth Road.

Ruth was one of the first people to welcome our family to the neighborhood. We have fond memories of Ruth standing at the bus stop waiting with us for the school bus, as we got caught up chatting. Before both the Thompsons and our trees grew taller, I recall seeing Ruth in her yard, tending to flowers, etc., and, of course, she loved the pool area. Ruth was a kind woman with an easy laugh, and her generosity to our family was endless. Frequently, we'd find that Ruth had driven up our driveway in her car, with a little gift of some sort. Michael and Emily grew up with her. We will all miss her. Love, Ken, Bev, Michael and Emily Beirne
