Many years later the anniversary of D-Day has caused me to find this obituary and to reflect on Bill and Helen. I was a neighbor of theirs next door while in law school in the early '90s. Our new puppy used to wake us up at night routinely between 3 and 5 am. I often noticed Bill's light on at that time. I asked about it one day, and he said that what he had been through in Europe during the war still woke him up at night. His light was on a lot. This was D+48 years at that time, and I recall being moved to think what Bill and men like him had sacrificed for our freedom, and that this sacrifice had continued for 48 years. I was also a hunter then, and Bill commented on how he had been too as a boy, but had never picked up a gun again after the war. His life, and Helen's, seemed lives well lived to me, of honor and devotion and gentleness, and continue to inspire me to this day. And they were very kind to this young law student, inviting me over to wander what Bill called his "Memorial Garden." Thanks, God, for Helen and Bill.
