William Shelton Obituary

Published by Daily Progress on May 11, 2010.
William Owen Shelton Jr.

William Owen Shelton Jr. of Midlothian, formerly of Fluvanna County, passed away suddenly on May 5, 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Richardson Shelton of Midlothian; and three sons, Richard W., James H., and William O. Shelton III; as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandsons, all of Florida.

A son, Robert, preceded him in death.

Mr. Shelton was born on August 16, 1923, in Joplin, Missouri, a son of the late Elizabeth Hansford and William O. Shelton Sr.

He attended the University of Michigan majoring in music theory and was employed for 30 years with C. G. Conn Ltd., manufacturers of musical instruments, where he was a District Sales Manager in many parts of the country, as well as Director of Educator Services. He was also a veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of the Eighth Army/Air Force where he was a member of the band which replaced the Glen Miller Band when Miller's plane was lost over the North Sea.

Mr. Shelton was an avid jazz enthusiast, and spent many of his retirement years playing trombone in big bands and small combos.

He will be buried in the Richardson family plot at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa. Burial will be private with arrangements by Preddy Funeral Home of Gordonsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fluvanna County SPCA, 5239 Union Mills Road, Troy, Virginia 22974.

I also had met Mr. Shelton in Nelson County, I am a friend of Walter Potter, they had property that bordered one another . It was really neat to here him speak about his experiences being in the band that continued where Glen Miller left off . It was an honer to have met him, as truly he was a member of the " Greatest Generation" . God Bless.

I was fortunate to have met Bill on few occasions and to have purchased one of his personal Conn trombones. I think of him every time I play it and am thankful for his legacy of kindness and joy surrounding the making of music (especially on the trombone).
