Helen J. Bateman

Helen J. Bateman, 93, died on Saturday, September 18, 2010.

She was born in Cumberland County, Illinois, and graduated from Eastern Illinois University. She was an English teacher and secretary. She retired in 1976 from Waynesboro Public Schools after 18 years of service as a secretary at Waynesboro High School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro.

For the past seven years, she resided at the Stuarts Draft Retirement Community and is survived by her husband of 71 years, Paul W. Bateman; and two sons and their spouses, Robert and Gail of Waynesboro and William and Sara of Glen Allen. Additionally, five grandsons and one step-grandson survive her, Adam Bateman of Glen Allen, Alexander Bateman of Richmond, Benjamin Bateman of Pasadena, California, John Bateman of Henrico, Thomas Bateman of New York City, and Mark Fitzgerald of Blue Ridge. Four great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. She was the last member of her immediate family.

A private family graveside service conducted by Dr. Glen A. Holman of First Presbyterian Church will be held at Augusta Memorial Park at a later date.

Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 11th Street at Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980.

I know it has been forever, but I am still out here. So sorry to hear of Helen's death. My condolences to Paul and both Bob abd Bill. So many wonderful memories of our families together and especially those Saturday night card games. Regards to all.

I have so many heartfelt memories of Aunt Helen when she and Uncle Paul would visit Illinois and we would come to Virginia. She was a very special person and she always made others feel special too. Please accept my concolences. May God fill your hearts with his peace and love during this time of grief. She will truely be missed.
