Guenther Leopold Obituary

Guenther Siegfried Leopold

Guenther Siegfried Leopold was born January 7, 1932 in Frankfurt Germany and passed away peacefully in his home on April 13, 2017.

Guenther is survived by his wife Adelle (married 59 years), his three children, Sandy Sarnoff, Sue Schwartzman (Gary), Jeff Leopold (Michelle) and six grandchildren: Aaron and Danielle Schwartzman, Jake and Jordan Sarnoff, and Trevor and Parker Leopold, his brother, Ernest Leopold (Carole) and nieces and nephew.

Guenther and his immediate family escaped Germany in 1939 to the Philippines where he lived for 6 years before making it to San Francisco with his family.

He attended Washington High School and Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He was a proud member of Peninsula Temple Sholom where he served as president among various other leadership positions.

His life's work was Standard 5 & 10 Stores where Guenther landed his first job as a stock clerk when he was 14 years old. Little did he know that retail would become not only his passion, but also the family business. Standard 5 & 10 was his "happy" place where he spent 71 years helping customers.

He will be dearly missed and will always be remembered as the sweetest man in the world, a true MENSCH.

Funeral services will be held on Friday April 14, 11:30 at Peninsula Temple Sholom in Burlingame.

Donations can be made to Outsmart Brain Cancer, Outsmartbc.com or Peninsula Temple Sholom.

Sweet Guenther, your 5 & 10 and your delightful personality gave me and many of my friends great memories while in high school and college. Smile on.

You will be missed by many not only relatives and friends but by all the people that came into the store for years. I will miss our wonderful chats about different products. And oh yes sometimes politics. You always had an answer if I was upset and always made me feel good after our conversation

I worked for Gunther in the 60s on Geary street while going to college. The old mr h and his son owned the stores at the time. It was the best job ever. Gunther was such a nice man and I've never forgotten him. Saw him and his family in Vermont years ago and didn't say hello. I always regretted that. Sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family.

Yesterday I walked past your condo in the morning and thought of you and Adele as I often do while walking our dog , but for a brief moment I visualized you getting out of your car in Sonoma, Cherry Ave parking lot and greeting us with "your" smile. It was a nice memory and it will always stay prominently in my mind. No one had a sweeter smile to share than you Gunther.

Paul and I feel sad that we haven't seen you in a while. We will miss seeing you around the Sonoma Greens.

The picture shown here is exactly the warm smile that I see in my minds eye.
