Alice Goodwin Obituary

GOODWIN, Alice Cocke, died October 14, 2010. She was born March 7, 1920 in Birmingham, Ala. to Alice DuBose and William Ruffin Coleman Cocke. She was a direct descendant of John Hartwell Cocke, who with Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, founded the University of Virginia in 1819 and who, 20 years later in 1839, was one of the founders of the Episcopal High School. At age nine, she moved with her family to Norfolk, Va., where she resided until her marriage. She graduated from Chatham Hall and attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. In 1942, she married Edward Howard Goodwin of Williamsburg, Va. Mrs. Goodwin's husband of 68 years predeceased her in June of 2010. She is survived by sons, Edward Howard Goodwin Jr. and his wife, Ellen, and William Archer Rutherfoord Goodwin III and his wife, Emily; daughter, Breckinridge Goodwin Longstreth and her husband, William; and five grandsons, three granddaughters, three great-grandsons, and two great-granddaughters. Mrs. Goodwin will be buried with her husband at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that remembrances be sent to Chatham Hall, 800 Chatham Hall Circle, Chatham, Va. 24531-3085, or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.
