Ruth Hoffman Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Sep. 22 to Sep. 23, 2010.
HOFFMAN, Ruth Beckley, 51, of Richmond, Va., daughter of William and Alice Sue Richardson Hoffman of Charlotte Court House, Va., died Sunday, September 19, 2010 in Greensboro, N.C. after a four month battle with CNS lymphoma. Ruth grew up in Charlotte Court House, graduated from Wellesley College in 1980 with a degree in medieval history, returned to VCU and received a master's degree in accounting/computer science, received her CPA license, and began a 24-year career with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond as a financial accountant. Ruth was a true intellect who read and traveled extensively. Her travels took her throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. She volunteered at Freedom House serving the homeless. She was a devoted animal lover throughout her life. Her kind and gentle spirit is embodied in the verse, "Blessed are the meek." Matthew 5:5. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, William Hoffman, and is survived by her mother, Alice Sue Richardson Hoffman of Charlotte Court House; her sister, Margaret Kay Huffman and husband, Neil; and nephews, Hunter and Andrew, and niece, Kathleen "K.K.," all of Greensboro, N.C. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Richmond Animal League, 1 1401 International Drive, Richmond, Va. 23236, or Freedom House, 1201 Hull Street, Richmond, Va. 23224, or the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North Fifth Street, Richmond, Va., on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in the church's chapel.

Ruth and I worked together for over 15 years at the Federal Reserve. We also shared the same birthdate, and sent each other birthday greetings every year. She was a very sweet person, and I am sorry that her life ended to prematurely. Bless you Ruth - where ever you are, know you are in my thoughts.

I met Ruth at one of the Wellesley Reunions for the class of 1980. We had always seen each other's names, while we were at college, since we shared the same last name of "Hoffman", but were not related. I missed seeing her at our reunion this past June. My thoughts and prayers go with her family.

I learned of Ruth's passing through a message to the Class of 1980 from the Wellesley Alumnae office. Though I didn't know Ruth at Wellesley, she seems to have embodied the ideal of Wellesley's motto, "ministering unto others." Several Wellesly friends of mine of a similar age have passed recently, all due to cancer. It is a tragedy that more research to end this scourge is not being funded. Please accept my deep condolences for the loss of a woman who reached out and used her life to make a difference.

Ruth was a lovely person whom I had the pleasure to work with on a number of occasions in years past -- always pleasant, always a smile, and from whom I never heard a harsh word. My condolences to the family.

To Ruth's Family & friends: My fondest memory of Ruth is the smile she had on her face when she talked about her cats and her family, especially the niece and nephews. I will always appreciate how Ruth took me under her wing my first day (and several afterwards) at the Federal Reserve and was able to mentor me through the process of being ingrained in "the way" things were done at the Fed. May God comfort you through this difficult time.

Sue and Margaret, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I went to school at PHA and PEA with both girls. Although it has been many years since all of us were in school there will always be memories of those days. Each person comes into our lives and touches us in ways we may not understand. We all created memories, -memories no one can take away. Although we were all so young we carry those memories with us everyday, as you will the memories of your lives with Ruth. I know how hard this is but you must realize the treasures she left behind for you. Each and every memory is a gift from her for each of us. Prays for your family as you gather together and these treasures are relived and held dear because of her and her love. With deepest sympathy.

I always remember Ruth as a cute intellectual young gal. Being much younger than me I did not know here well, but I certainly know the closeness in her family. and feel a great sense of loss for them, particularly coming so soon after the loss of Bill. My heart and prayers go out to Sue, Margret, Neal and their families. Such a short life for such a bright young person. There is a void left in this world and in many hearts.

To the Family of Ruth Hoffman:
Please accept my deepest sympathy. Ruth and Margaret attended grade school with my sister Joan and I at Patrick Henry many years ago. Even though we had not seen each other in years, I still remember her kindness and love. It seems as though she never changed from the sweet young girl of grade school. May God be with you all and guide you through this difficult time. Your family will be in my prayers.

To Ruth's family and friends: I had the absolute pleasure of working with Ruth for many years at the Federal Reserve. I enjoyed every encounter with her and never saw her without a big smile on her face. People like that don't come along often and I am glad I had the opportunity to cross paths with her. Although there is grief and pain now, memories will be the gift you are left with forever.

Please accept my sympathy. It was my pleasure to be regaled with Ruth's tales of her trips to France during the brief time we worked in the same department. I was able to travel to France vicariously through her pictures. She has been and will continue to be missed.

To the family and friends of Ruth,
Being one who has walked this path, I can truly say, my thoughts and prayers of peace are being lifted to the heavens for all of you. I worked with Ruth at the bank for 16 years. As others have already mentioned, she always was kind to everyone and remembered all the "little" things going on in your life. She always took the time to inquire about you and your family and was always encouraging. Although we worked in different departments, I enjoyed running into her and catching up on her recent activity. Her love for life, family, and friends was always evident. I will greatly miss her, but I take comfort in knowing that she is without pain and in the arms of our gracious Lord and Savior.
As time moves on, the burden of her passing will ease, and it will be replaced with the joyful memories you share of her. May God grant you all Peace, Love, and Joy.

"Miss Ruth had a good memory." This was what my five year old said when I asked him to tell me his favorite thing about Ruth. As for me, I remember Ruth as a wonderful neighbor and friend, my cultural connection: She had always seen the latest movie (Juno, Slumdog Millionaire) or could tell tales of her international walking expeditions. I lived next door to Ruth for over six years. Her memory was truly extraordinary; she always had a card and gift for my son on his birthday. I will miss her but glad my son has a guardian angel.

To The Hoffman Family, My prayers of comfort, peace and love be with you. Thanks so much for the opportunity of having the great pleasure of knowing Ruth for 24 years, as a co-worker at the Federal Reserve Bank. Ruth's presence left you refreshed. Her humble sweetness, will be missed in our work place. Ruth carried herself like an angel here on earth, so I know she's in heaven. She's eternally free of pain. Be encouraged, with time and trust, the tears will transform into joyful memories.
