Jeffrey George Obituary

Published by Roanoke Times from Dec. 6 to Dec. 7, 2008.
Jeffrey Edward George, M.D., 49, of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Huntington, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord on December 3, 2008, near Roanoke. Born December 20, 1958, son of the late Edward and Frances Shaw George, Dr. George is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Teresa Kimbler George. He graduated from Duke University in 1980 and West Virginia University Medical School in 1984. He completed his general surgery residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1989 and his cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Louisville in 1991. His honors include valedictorian of Huntington High School and, later, recipient of the Lange Outstanding Senior Medical Student Award at WVU. He received the Baird Memorial Surgical Research award many times during his general surgery training. Furthermore, he was designated as one of the "Best Doctors in America" six separate times. He was also chairman of the Hospitality House (now the Jeffrey E. George Comfort House); director of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at St. Mary's Medical Center; Chairman of St. Mary's Medical Center Foundation; Professor and Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Dr. George and his family returned to Roanoke, where he joined Carilion Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates. His tireless efforts on behalf of all patients continued through his work on the safety and quality improvement team for improving patient outcomes.
Survivors include two aunts, Linda George Sakakini and Rosalie George; and many special cousins. He also leaves behind two beloved dogs.
Dr. George will forever be remembered as a man who respected all people and was generous beyond compare. Beyond all his medical expertise and attention to his patients, his family always knew they were his first love. Dr. George was also an avid tennis player. He loved his country and he loved his church, serving on various commissions at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church. Beyond all accolades, Dr. George exemplified an incredibly rare character of love, dignity and loyalty. Not only was he the greatest friend anyone could have, but he also lived his life in complete devotion to the people of Huntington and the tri-state area.

Services will be held at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, Huntington, W.Va., on Monday, December 8, 2008, at 11 a.m., Dr. Allen Reasons officiating. Entombment will be held at Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church. Klingel-Carpenter is in charge of arrangements. The family guestbook may be signed at www.klingel-carpenter.com. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either Jeffrey E. George Comfort House or Fifth Avenue Baptist Church.

I only worked with Dr. George (CRMH CSICU) for a year before moving down here to Wilson, but I will always remember him. He was by far one of my favorite MD's to work with. He was just so sweet and laid back, and just plain fun to be around. I was never afraid to talk to him about my patients. He never treated me with any disrespect and he really cared about his patients. I was devastated when I heard about this tragedy. He will be dearly missed. I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers.

Teresa,

I pray that God will give you courage and the strength to get through each day...I grew up with Jeff at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church...He, undoubtedly, was one of the most Godly men I've ever met, and so kind....I can still see Hannah walking through the halls at church; such a beautiful smile...We grieve with you...Please know that you have so many people who are praying for you here at Fifth Avenue...In Christ, Robin Tarter Adkins

Mrs. George,
I am truly sorry for the loss of your husband and daughter.
I met Dr. George this past spring when my brother was referred to him for surgery. In minutes of that first visit we knew that we had been blessed with a wonderful, caring and knowledgeable doctor. There was no doubt that my brother was now in very capable hands.
My brother was one of many people that Dr. George saved their lives and I thank God for that.
Dr. George and Hannah will live in our hearts forever. We will continue to lift you up in our thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. George,
I did not know your husband or your beautiful daughter Hannah. I work down the hall from Dr. George's office at Carilion Crystal Spring. Many times each work day since your tragedy I have walked past the door with his name on it and each time I have thought of you and prayed for you sometimes with tears in my eyes because of the grief you must have. There are flowers in his office in memory of him and the hallway outside the door is full of sunlight and warmth.

Many people truly care about you and we will pray you through... May the Holy Spirit comfort you in a special way today.

I worked numerous years with Dr. George in Open Heart Recovery, CCU and Cardiac Stepdown at St. Mary's. I remember working with you too. I first met Jeff George in 1965, when we were in Elementary school together (Miss Clark, Mrs Rummel, Miss Davis, Mrs Plymale, and Mrs Smith's classes I believe). I remember him as being bright, kind and responsible - just what anyone would want in a physician. After we grew up and I moved away, I'd see his name around Huntington when I visited and was always pleased to know that he not only had great talent and compassion, but that he was generous in sharing them. In your unimaginable grief, please know that Jeff was and is well-loved and appreciated by so so many. We were all fortunate to have had him in our lives.

Mrs. George,
I wanted to let you know that my husband and myself feel your husband was a exceptionally caring and talented man. He performed a major heart surgery on my husband in June of this year, he gave us hope when many did not. He treated us like people, not a number, he not only treated and saved a heart, he treated our fears and our concerns, it is because of him that we now have years to share instead of days. What a beautiful difference one life has made, in our lives and many others. I thank you for sharing this wonderful man with those that needed him. He was a true blessing to our family. You have my deepest sympathy for the loss of your husband and daughter.

December 8, 2008

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. George's family. You don't get to meet very many hero's in this world we live in, but Dr. George was a hero to the staff on Skilled Nursing at St. Mary's. May god be with you in your time of grief.

To the Family of Dr. George and his beautiful daughter, Hannah;
I did not know you, but I know that these were two very special people.
This is a very old, Irish prayer that I hope will bring you some comfort:

"Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I and you are you, whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone; wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Pray, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort, without the trace of a shadow in it. Life means all that it ever meant - it is the same as it ever was - there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well."

I am also one of the many nurses who worked with Dr. George at SMMC. I only knew him the last 2 years he practiced in Huntington, but quickly learned that he was one of the most compassionate and skilled physicians I had ever had the privilege of knowing. No matter how tired he may have been, his face always lit up when the subject of Hannah arose. He was so proud of her. I remember one day he mentioned how concerned he was for you both because you were pulling the horse trailer, instead of him, with Hannah on your way to a show. As a mother myself, I can only imagine how you feel, but hope that it provides some comfort to know that your precious baby girl did not die alone, but with her daddy who loved her like no one else in the world could. I am sure you have many many friends and family who will do their best to guide and suppport you. God Bless You, Hannah and Jeff

Heather Stiltner, Paramedic

December 6, 2008

I am a Paramedic with Mercy Ambulance Service out of Tazewell County in Southwest Virginia. I am sure that I have probably transported many patients from other facilities to Dr. George for life-saving surgery. On the day of the tragic accident me and my partner were transporting a patient to UVA when we happened upon the accident. It had just occurred and we tried our hardest but there was just nothing we could do. That had to be one of the hardest times in my career of 7 years in EMS. I am so very sorry that this incident occurred and my heart goes out to you and your family. May god take care of you in your time of need and you will forever be in my heart, thoughts and prayers.

I knew Jeff when he was a small boy. I worked at George Tobacco Company, a store owned by Jeff's father and his uncles. Years later, Jeff performed open heart surgery on me. I will never forget his compassion- he sensed I was very nervous. He touched my hands and said,"Larry- I will do my best. Dad would come back and haunt me if I didn't take care of you." Needless to say, I came through the surgery and believe I am here today because of his skills. A few months later, Jeff saw me at a local restaurant and came over to say hello. Hannah was with him- Jeff was so proud when he introduced her. All of my prayers are for your family. Larry Kyle

To Dr. George's wife, Teresa, and mother of Hannah and his family members:
This is a devastating loss that my family offers our hearfelt condolences.
Dr. George performed aortic anuerysm surgery on my Dad, Leonard Blevins, in 1997, the first surgery of this kind to be performed at St Marys and we knew the risks since Dad was 76yrs old but we had confidence that Dad would make it and he did and lived an additional 2/1/2 yrs ; of which we were grateful, thanks to Dr. George.
Such a tragedy, it's hard to comprehend; Hannah's picture was in the Herald Dispatch in Huntington today with her Dad and it broke our hearts; please know that your family is in our prayers.
Sincerely,

So saddened by the loss of Dr. George & his daughter! We became acquainted with him when I had to have open heart surgery & he was the one performing it. He was referred to as the new kid on the block when I met him. I had the utmost confidence in his ability but still had fear of the unknown. He did a wonderful job & I did great under his care. When it was time for my second open heart there was no question in my mind of whom I wanted to perform the task. Dr George was the only man for the job in my eyes. Once again he amazed me with his abilities & I recovered quickly from the surgery. I feel in my heart that he was one of the many angels God sends from above to do His work through them. We can't express the sympathy we feel at the loss of your husband & daughter but pray that in knowing the respect your husband gained by his abilities & the testimonies he has left behind for others to remember will sustain you until God calls you home. Keep your light shining through God & know they are comforted by your strength. sincerely

It was with great sadness that I heard of the passing of Dr.George & his daughter. I worked at St.Mary's hospital and would see him from time to time. I had heard great things about him but had never spoken to him personally until we were together in the elevator one day. He just did his typical hi & nodded his head so I took the opportunity to speak to him & give thanks for something he had done for the best friend & confidant in my life other than God. I said well i can't believe I'm in the elevator with the infamous Dr. George....he smiled & said I'm nothing special just a man. I went on to tell him that I had heard of him long before I started working in the therapy department there because he had performed my dad's open heart surgery years before. I said my dad thinks you are the greatest man he's ever met...he then in all ernest said well I appreciate the compliment but ...(he pointed toward Heaven)thats the greatest man he will ever meet. I had such admiration for his kindness & the fact that he took the time to witness & took the spotlight from himself. Little did I know that just a few short months later he would perform a second open heart on dad. He explained once again what the procedures would be & lightened dad's worries by adding ...I never thought you liked me so well that you would go throught it again just so I would come spend time in your room with you. Dad went through it with flying colors & I credit Dr. George with the abilities God gave him & will never forget the final words to the prayer he said before starting...God once again not through my hands but in your will let this be done! Such a testimony he has left behind. May God surround you in the loss of him & your precious daughter until you go home to spend eternity with them.

Teresa,
I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to know all three of you.
St. Mary's was blessed to have both of you as part of our family. The volunteers are very concerned about you. They have asked that I share their condolences. I loved serving on the Foundation board with Jeff.
He was so gentle and kind to my Mother. She did not want to go back after he left. She told me "he is a good man". He touched so many lives. This world is a better place because of Jeff George.

I watched Hanna grow into a very special young lady. The last time I saw her was in the sky box at Marshall. I always thought she looked like Jeff. It was the first time I saw you in her face.

May God give you strength to heal.

Teresa,
I am so very sorry for your tremendous loss. I knew Jeff during his residency when I worked in the neuro ICU at RMH; he was always a favorite of the staff because of his kindness, compassion, and ability to handle a crisis. I was able to see him again briefly at a conference in Ft. Lauderdale this past February, and the first thing he did was pull a picture of Hannah (on a horse, in full riding gear) out of his wallet. He was obviously so proud of her, and spoke with such love about your family. I hope that the knowledge of how much he was loved and how many lives he touched will provide some measure of comfort for you in the difficult days that lie ahead. You will be in my prayers every day.
