Ann Hunt Obituary

Published by Legacy on May 9, 2023.
Ann Elizabeth Hunt- age 74 of Lake, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at her home. Ann was born on July 4th, 1948, the eldest of five children, to parents Douglas Robert, and Elizabeth Anne (Johnson) Gray in Hazel Park, (Redford Twp.) Michigan. Her father Douglas was a commercial construction superintendent, and her mother Elizabeth was a homemaker. Annie graduated from high school in 1966, after which she went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Oakland University in 1970. After living in Flint, Annie, and her husband Phill, as well as several likeminded "back to the earth" friends, yearned for a lifestyle different than what a city offered. That year they purchased forty acres of property in Clare County and formed the Ragged Rainbow Communal Farm. Raising their own crops and critters and eschewing modern conveniences, they poured their hearts into the enterprise and made a go of it. After a few years, the commune began to dissolve. Phill and Annie retain the property and it simply became the Ragged Rainbow Farm which became the focal point of the Hunt and Gray families and where they would raise three children. Annie and Phill continued with their communal spirit, creating a home and safe haven for many locals and travelers. People continued to go out of their way to seek the warm embrace that the knowledge and spirit of counterculture skill sets (farming, handwork skills, maple sugaring and pioneering). Annie always had a seat at the table for those who needed one. Annie continued to be a steward for Environment in many ways, including founding with Phill CACC (Citizens for Alternatives to Chemical Contamination) in 1978, a grass roots organization formed to force the Michigan Department of Agriculture to adhere to EPA regulations when applying pesticides that could adversely impact organic croplands, wetlands and water-borne organisms. She worked with CACC as the Executive Director and later the treasurer up until her medical diagnosis. Annie was also a member and officer for the Michigan Environmental Council. Annie was very connected in her community and throughout Clare County. She owned and operated the Stonehouse Bookstore in Lake Station, while taking part in the Rotary Club, Lake Association and many more organizations both locally and statewide. Annie started her career in Human Resources in 1994 and went on to earn her master's degree in the field after discovering her holistic views on the importance of people in the workplace. Annie/Wife/Mom/Grandma/Great-Grandma was a force in her family. She loved and supported her family far and wide. She made time to travel to be with those she loved and showed up ready to feed the masses, laugh, read books, knit them gifts, and go for walks. She loved to hear about what her family was passionate about and supported them in their dreams. Ann Elizabeth Hunt leaves to cherish wonderful memories her husband of 47 years, Phillip, her son Chance Hunt and wife Deana of Farwell, her daughters Meadow Grace of Indian River, MI, Olive Elizabeth Timms and husband Essick "Butch" of Valrico, FL, step daughter Nicoline Hunt and husband Brian of Valley, WA.; thirteen grandchildren; Stormy, Dakoda, Rebecca, Alexandra, Maya, Essick, Ronin, Deacon, Apollo, Caleb, Anna, Gwendolyn, Zealand, three great-grandchildren; Skyler, Erebus, Finnley, brother Andy and wife Marie Gray of FL, sisters Sarah Gray of Lake, Mary Gray of NM brother in law Tom Waggoner of Farmington Hills, sisters in law, Sylva Hunt of Tawas, Carol Wallis and husband Allan Wallis of OR and many more family members and friends. My deepest condolences for the wonderful Hunt family. Just knowing Annie has enriched my life. She was so kind and smart - a role model. I watched her knitting many times as she would smile and carry on a conversation with folks. I thought, 'how cool is that?!' So I decided to ask her if she would fix my favorite lifetime article of clothing. She said ok. She knit the holes together in my forty year old wool sweater which had joined me on rivers, lakes, trails, and mountain tops. I'll cherish it for the rest of my life as it will join me many times again in those places now with Annie's handiwork. We love you Annie and see ya later.
