Arlene, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Liewer) Weitl, was born on November 12, 1929, in Templeton, Iowa. She grew up on a farm outside Templeton and attended Sacred Heart School. On April 10, 1951, Arlene was united in marriage to Gaylord Stangl, son of Frank and Julia (Bruning) Stangl, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton. The couple made their home on a dairy farm east of Dedham, where they raised their nine children.
Arlene was a dedicated wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking for their many family gatherings. She was also an avid gardener, and a master at sewing, quilting and decorating cakes. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Arlene was involved in many community activities including the Dedham St. Joseph's Ladies Guild, St. Joseph's choir, Dedham Ladies Auxiliary, and the local Homemakers Club. She also volunteered many hours to various organizations, including New Hope.
She moved to Carroll in 2016, where she was a resident of Orchard View, and enjoyed many social activities with her friends and neighbors, such as completing puzzles and playing cards.
Arlene is survived by her children: Craig (Jill) Stangl of Coon Rapids; Royce Stangl of Coon Rapids; Peggy (Martin) de Tezanos Pinto of Argentina; Linda (Joe) Byrum of West Des Moines; and Leann (Dan) McElroy of West Des Moines; sons-in-law Jim Darby; Rod Gonnerman and LeRoy Schlichte; 21 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; brother: Norbert Weitl; sister: Sr. Myra Weitl; sisters-in-law Ruth Ann Weitl, Almyra Weitl and Pat Weitl; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended relatives.
