Bruce Bracken Nelson died peacefully July 31, 2023. He was 68 years old. Bruce was born June 23, 1955, in Detroit, the second of Donald and Donna Nelson's 11 children.
Bruce grew up in Birmingham, and was a member of St. Regis Parish. He graduated from Brother Rice High School in 1973. As a youth he enjoyed camping with the Boy Scouts, tinkering with homemade radios, and vacationing on Beaver Island. He also enjoyed reading Popular Mechanics magazine, and developing his black and white photos in the "powder room" which he secretly turned into a darkroom. During his summers in high school, he worked as a laborer for his father's construction company. Bruce went on to attend the University of Michigan College of Engineering for 2 years. In his early twenties, he was afflicted by mental illness and battled it the rest of his life. May he now rest in peace.
He is survived by his siblings, Donald A. Nelson (LiChiu), Janet (the late Dcn. Dave) Lawrence, Doug Nelson, Kelly (Jerry) Bonar, Andrea (Tom) Best, Katie (Jim) Blaney, John (Laurie) Nelson, Bob (Allison) Nelson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dr. Richard Nelson (Kathryn), and infant brother Andrew Nelson.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, Bloomfield Hills, Friday, August 4, at 10:30am. Friends may visit beginning at 10am.
Committal services will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
