Derry L. Jones passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023 in Crockett. Derry was born on August 26, 1941 in Corpus Christi to Morris Floyd Jones and Era Reynolds Jones. He spent his teen years in Palestine and graduated from Palestine High School in 1960, then married Alice Speaker of Hitchcock on December 12, 1980 in Houston. He retired from Harris County Sheriff's Department in 2003 after 20 years of service. Derry and his wife moved to Crockett to be near her family. He later discovered he had many second and third cousins living in the county and that his father was born in Percilla.
Derry was a part time employee of the Houston County Sheriff's Department for five years. He thoroughly enjoyed country living. In addition to working on the farm he spent many enjoyable hours watching the abundant wild life that was on the property. Derry never knew what he would see. He spotted a black cougar and a tan cougar on a cold December morning. Also abundant were bob cats, foxes, jack rabbits and many other animals. The squirrels were especially funny as they tried to figure out how to reach seeds in the bird feeder. A huge raccoon visited every night to look for scraps and left over cat food.
Derry was a faithful member of SNAP fitness for many years. He enjoyed going every day and enjoyed seeing the great friends he met there. These friends were a great source of joy. Derry loved bass fishing and over the years he spent many enjoyable hours on the lake fishing with his friends. Derry was a member of the Davy Crockett Cruisers car club. He enjoyed traveling. In retirement he was able to visit many beautiful and historic places. Civil war battle fields were fascinating. Alaska cruises were the number one favorite vacation.
Derry is survived by his wife of almost 43 years, Alice Jones; his son, Gerry Jones and wife, Sandy of San Marcus; grandson, Tyler Jones of San Marcus; brother, Randy Jones of Palestine; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by parents, Floyd and Era Jones.
Graveside services for Derry L. Jones will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the Lovelady Antioch Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Ivey officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. prior to the service.
