Dr. Jonathan James Hruska, age 76 of Clive, Iowa, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Kavanagh House on 56th in Des Moines, Iowa.
Jon was born on November 10, 1946 to Glenn and Betty (Varner) Hruska in Belmond, Iowa. After graduating from Belmond High School, he earned his undergraduate from Iowa State University and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Iowa in 1972. After serving his residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, he would go on to practice family medicine for over 34 years in Storm Lake until his retirement in 2008.
On August 19, 1967 in Belmond, Jon would marry the love of his life, Lynnette Tomson. Together they enjoyed full-time RVing after Jon’s retirement; spending time in Gulf Shores, AL, joining a group of 21 for an Alaskan and Canadian two month Caravan and traveling throughout the United States. Lynn and Jon were also blessed to partake in a Riverboat Cruise from Prague to Paris before his health limited his travels in 2018. In 2010, they would move to West Des Moines before settling in Clive in 2019.
Jon loved practicing medicine and thought the world of his colleagues, nurses and patients he met along the way. He missed them all so much after his retirement. Jon enjoyed running, boating and gardening in his free time. He loved rooting for the Hawkeyes (and the Cyclones at times too - when they weren’t playing the Hawkeyes that is). His wife, children and grandchildren meant the world to him and he cherished every moment he had with them.
Jon is survived by his wife Lynn; son Nate (Kristine Johnson) Hruska of Asheville, NC; daughters Jennie (Charlie) Chedester of Des Moines and Kristi (Matt) Striffler of Omaha; sister Molly Ketchum of Boone; grandchildren Ethan, Sydney and Aaron Hruska, Emma, Jac and Ben Chedester and Keaton and Aly Striffler; sister-in-law Linda Geery of Knoxville and nephew and nieces Chad Ketchum, Michelle Ketchum, Cara Irving and Cami Hollinrake. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jeff Hruska.
In keeping with Jon’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in Jon’s memory to: EveryStep Hospice, 900 56th Street, Des Moines, IA 50312 or Infinity Home Care, PO Box 13080, Des Moines, IA 50310.
Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with Jon's final arrangements.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Dr Hruska was such a wonderful person and physician. It was such a pleasure to work with him for many years at the hospital. He genuinely cared for his patients and provided such wonderful medical care. He was brilliant and compassionate. We feel so blessed to have had him for our family physician for so many years. He was like part of our family. Sending our love and hugs to Lynn and family at the loss of someone so special!
