Harry Charles Obituary
Harry Charles, age 98, of Scott Township, died on Saturday, November 11, 2023. He was born on April 25, 1925, the son of the late Michael and Jennie Charles.
Beloved husband of the late Mildred (Albert) Charles. Devoted father of Thomas (Susan), David (Elisabeth), and Donald (Oksana). Loving grandfather of Francis (Jonathan), Christopher, Amelia and proud Great-grandfather to Lucas and Arnelly.
Born in Carnegie, Harry graduated from Carnegie High School. After graduation he served in the United States Army during WWII and saw action in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. While serving under General George Patton, Harry was awarded a Purple Heart with oakleaf clusters, and three Bronze Stars.
Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to Western Pennsylvania where he met and married the love of his life, Millie, to whom he was married for 60 years. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. After graduation, and for his entire career, he was employed by Pennsylvania Transformer, which became McGraw-Edison and later Cooper Industries, in Canonsburg.
An advocate for children of all ages, Harry always encouraged and supported the activities of his sons. He emphasized academics and encouraged their interests in music and sports. As an amateur musician, he passed his love of music to his sons and provided them with every opportunity to experience music to the fullest. In sports, he served as a manager, a league director, and a purchasing agent for the former Bower Hill Baseball Association.
Harry’s legacy will be his devotion to his family and friends and the joy he brought to them through his love, selflessness, and generosity. He will be sincerely missed.
Family and friends are welcome Thursday and Friday from 2–4 and 6–8 in WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Twp., 15220. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. The interment will be at Jefferson Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Harry Charles to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000 Dept. 142 Memphis, TN 38148.
