John P. League, age 94, passed away on November 1, 2022, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 7, 2022, in Crestview Memorial Park, with Reverend Don Pellikan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.
Mr. League was born on September 10, 1928 to John W. League and Erma K. League in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He moved, with his family, to Wichita Falls in August, 1939. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve, while attending Hardin College (Midwestern State University) and was called to active duty on March 3, 1952. He served at several stations in the United States and was assigned to the Hospital Ship, USS Consolation, AH15, in September, 1952, and joined his ship at Inchon, Korea. In June, 1953, the Consolation returned to San Diego, where he transferred to the USS Ajax, where he served until his release from active duty on December 9, 1953.
Mr. League received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy, which at the time he had obtained the rank of SKG3 and had received the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Ribbon (Two Stars) and Combat Action Ribbon.
Mr. League graduated from Wichita Falls Senior High School, attended Hardin Junior College, Hardin College (Midwestern University). He was also a graduate of the American Institute of Banking and of Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Following graduation he served as the Thesis Advisor to students, majoring in Trust Services and Administration for a period of seven years.
Mr. League also worked for the First-Wichita National Bank, predecessor to MBank and Bank One, in Wichita Falls for 38 years and retired as Senior Vice President and Trust Office and Manager of the Trust Department. In July, 1987, he joined the Walton Bank Group in Bentonville, Arkansas, where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Arvest Trust Company, Rogers, Arkansas, which is owned by the Walton Family of Bentonville, Arkansas. In 1994, he retired and returned to Wichita Falls that same year, with his wife, Sue. As a Trust Officer he was active in State Trust activities, serving the Texas Bankers Association as Secretary, First Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Trust Committee.
Additionally, he served as a member of the Arkansas Bankers Association, Trust Committee for three years. During his youth and later his adult years, he was active in the Boy Scouts, was an Eagle Scout and served as District Director of the Northwest Texas Council Boy Scouts of America. He was also active as a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the Finance Committee for several years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a longtime resident of Wichita Falls, Texas.
He married Gloria Sue Taylor February 19, 1949, in Wichita Falls, Texas. She preceded him in death along with his parents John W. League and Erma K. League.
John is survived by his daughter Lori Laramee and her husband Mike Laramee of Fort Worth, Texas; and one sister, Rosemary Tidwell of Houston, Texas; and several nieces and one nephew.
