LESTER HAZEL Obituary
Lester B. Hazel was born on December 1, 1962, at Robert B. Green Hospital, to father Hubert Hazel and mother Katherine Hazel. He was the youngest son born into the loving Hazel family. Lester lived a life full of joy, laughter, and benevolence – sharing his big-heart and kindness with everyone he crossed paths with in his 61 years.
Lester grew up on the Eastside of San Antonio where he attended SAISD schools. He graduated from Fox Tech High School in 1982 where he was a star athlete on the basketball team throughout all 4 years. Upon graduation, Lester attended Southern Methodist University where he majored in Criminal Justice.
Lester was a hard-working man, dedicated to providing for his family. Most notably, he was an H-E-B partner from 1994 until 2001 where he was responsible for transferring product to surrounding stores around the region. In 2000, Lester joined the VIA Metropolitan Transit team as a bus operator where he remained until 2020. VIA was his dream job as he wanted to be a bus operator from the time that he was a little boy. He truly loved interacting with and getting to know his customers. In 2005, Lester added Mondelez (Kraft Foods 2005-2016) to his resume where, he got the nickname "cookie man" from his VIA co-workers by sharing cookies and candies with them. Lester's final workplace was with the City of San Antonio (2018-2023). He held several positions with the city from stockroom/mail clerk with the Airport Aviation Department to chauffeur with the Department of Human Services. He enjoyed getting to interact with the different departments throughout the city and serving his community by transporting the elderly to their daily activities. Lester remained as a chauffeur with the City until his passing. Regardless of where he worked, Lester was quick to make friends and become a valued team member.
A proud father, Lester was blessed with 8 children: Lester "Jerome", Crystal, Desiree "Ray", Desmona "Mona", Destiny, Forrest, Sommer, and Austin "AJ". Lester's children were his pride and joy, and he was their hero and will remain in their hearts forever.
In October 2002, Lester married the love of his life, Martha Flores Hazel. Their union was filled with love, laughter, and support for one another.
Lester never met a stranger and loved everyone he met and would always try to make you smile. He always had jokes and he loved making his world-famous enchiladas. Lester was an avid Cowboy's fan and enjoyed building model toy cars, train sets and playing his favorite game with his kids, Animal Crossing.
On December 9, 2023, at 9:25AM, he heard his Heavenly Father's call, "Well Done", with his family at his hospital bedside.
Lester is preceded in death by his father, Hubert "Big Tiny" Hazel, and mother, Katherine "Pithie" Hazel, his brothers, Clarence Perkins, Daniel "Boon" McNeil, Freddrick Lee Holt, Billy Hazel and his sister, Althea Marie "Re-Re" Hazel-Baines. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Martha Hazel; daughters Crystal Falo (Barbara), Desiree Hazel (Shaun), Desmona "Mona" Hazel (Ugene), Destiny Mason (Robert), and Sommer Hazel; his sons, Lester "Jerome" Millett, Forrest Blackwell, and Austin "AJ" Hazel. The wonderful mothers of his children, Wendy Carpenter, Karen Hodges-Catlin, Gloria Rangel, and Tonette Temple. Two brothers, Hubert "Tiny" Hazel, Larry Hazel, and sister, Dorothy Jean "Gina" Hammond. Eight grandchildren, Jaleah Millett, Zamyriah Blackwell, Ishani Blackwell, Ilaini Blackwell, Xander Rangel, Abraham Falo, Stefano Rangel, and Vocett Rangel, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The day I met Lester was when he picked me up at my home to take me to Darner Senior Center. After that we also included him in our breakfast or parties at the center. He gave me a bag of Mexican candy with chili. He was kind, caring and compassionate towards one lady that needed assistance getting into the van. When we had our monthly birthday party he was included as one of us. He was loved by our seniors. We will miss him. As for myself my heart is broken. Our condolences to his wife Martha and his children and his family. May God Bless them and comfort them in this difficult moment.
