James Elry Hazel, 80, of Somonauk, IL, passed away September 28, 2025, at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on September 5, 1945, in Reevesville, IL, the son of Thomas Nathaniel Hazel and Ova Mae (Eades) Hazel. He married Judith Sue (Casper) Hazel on October 19, 1963, in Golconda, IL. He was employed at Lyon Metal in Montgomery, IL for 42 years before retiring in 2005.
He is survived by his three children, Richard (Carol) Hazel of Rock Falls, IL, Kimberly (Dave) Cruse of Somonauk, IL, and Adam Hazel of Somonauk, IL; three grandchildren, Josiah (Jenna) Hazel of Omaha, NE, Daniel (Emma) Hazel of Chicago, IL, and Abigail (Brandon) Vant Land of Crestline, CA., three great-grandchildren, Elin Hazel, August and Finley Vant Land and one more on the way, his sisters, Eunice Williams and Sandra Carter both of Paw Paw, IL and several nieces and nephews and in-laws.
He was preceded in death by his wife Judith Sue (Casper) Hazel, a sister Josephine (Hazel) Jennings, a brother Tommy Hazel and his mother and father, Thomas Nathaniel Hazel, and Ova Mae (Eades) Hazel.
James was well known for walking around the neighborhood and greeting everyone he met. It was joked that he could have been a great Wal-Mart greeter. He could be seen on most days walking along the road and picking up cans. He loved walking around the Sandwich Fair everyday it was opened and loved eating out at various restaurants. He also enjoyed fishing, doing crosswords and scratching off lottery tickets.
James will be cremated and the family will be having a private memorial for him at a later date.
