Of Marlton, NJ, passed away on August 29, 2023. She was 94 years old. Beloved wife of the late Samuel David Townsend. Loving mother of Beth Pepper (Philip), Patricia Townsend, and Mary D'Alessandro (Patrick). Devoted grandmother of Sam Pepper, Kara D'Alessandro and Jake D'Alessandro. Daughter of the late Fred Stirman, Sr. and the late Eula Faye (nee French) Stirman. Sister of the late Fred Stirman, Jr. (the late Gladine), the late Beth Gipson (John) and the late Loma Howard (Dean). She is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews. She graduated from the Abilene Christian College, where she met her husband Sam, who had served in the Army during World War II. They were married for 69 years until his death on July 19, 2019. They at first lived in Haddonfield, where he was from, but later lived in Cherry Hill, where they raised their children, and Marlton. Lucy loved her work as an English teacher at Beck Middle School in Cherry Hill. She was proud of singing in choral groups in Philadelphia that sang with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She was a member of Moorestown United Methodist Church and later of Wiley Church in Marlton, as well as a member of the American Association of University Women. She loved to travel and had visited 69 countries on 6 continents. She was recognized by her warm smile and loving heart. The family will honor Lucy's life in a private service, and she will join her beloved Sam at Brigadier General Doyle Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to pbs.org
