Michael C. Gutierrez

Michael C. Gutierrez, of Redding, California, passed away on April 23, 2023 at Mercy Hospital in Redding. Born to Michael and Trini (Castellanos) Gutierrez in Salinas, California in 1944, and raised in Spreckels, CA, he graduated from Palma High School and earned his BA in English from Loyola University in Los Angeles. Upon graduating, "Iron Mike" joined the United States Marine Corps (1967-1970) and proudly served in Vietnam as First Lieutenant in the 1st Marine Division.
Mike was an integral member of many fraternal and community organizations. He was honored as a fourth degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus in Anderson, CA. Mike served on and chaired many boards including the Shasta Marines. He organized Redding's Marine Corps Birthday Ball for several years.
Mike has received many honors and awards for his community service including special recognition as Veterans' Advocate of the Year from the United States Congress, California State Senate, California State Assembly and Shasta County Veterans Affiliated Council.
Mike was a man of deep faith and was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Church in Anderson.
He is survived by and will be dearly missed by Ellen, his wife of 51 years, and their children, Lisa Gutierrez (Jeff James), Michael Gutierrez (Bridget Hawkins), Joni Spicer (Ronald), Mary Gutierrez (Tim Kingsley), David Gutierrez, and grandchildren Caitlin, Jason, Allegra, Cheyenne, Spencer, Rowen, Emmett, and Helena, as well as his siblings Richard Gutierrez and Teresa Owen, and his Aunt Amelia Mae Tognazzini. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother, Robert.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10am on Friday, May 5th, 2023 at Sacred Heart Church, 3141 St. Stephens Drive, Anderson, CA 96007; there will be a Rosary Vigil also at the church at 7pm on Thursday, May 4th. He will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Redding.
