Petronilla (Bonadio) Mercuri,
Of West Newton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday morning, December 30, 2023 after a long illness. She was 89.
Born in Platania, Calabria, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Pietro and Antonia (Villella) Bonadio.
Mrs. Mercuri has made her home in West Newton since 1970.
Working for several companies throughout her life she retired several years ago from Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
A wonderful cook, she was an avid gardener who enjoyed tending to her flowers and knitting. Mrs. Mercuri loved to have her family around her, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Mercuri is the beloved wife of Antonio to whom she celebrated 67 years of marriage just weeks ago.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Giovannina Torcasio and her husband, Salvatore of Newton and Gennaro "Jerry" Mercuri and wife Judith Ann of Sharon, her sister Maria Butera and her husband Leo of Newton, her brothers, Michael Bonadio of Falmouth, Gennaro Bonadio of Stow and Antonio Bonadio of Newton, her grandchildren, Giovanna Forte and her husband Justin, Marisa Talarico and her husband Antonio, Antonio Torcasio and his wife Kelley, Jessica Aronson and her husband, Adam and Michelle Mercuri and her fiancé Colby Gerard, her great-grandchildren, Isabella and Giuliana Forte, Martina, Massimo and Mara Talarico, Liliana and Salvatore Torcasio and Matthew and Vivian Aronson for whom she was known as "Nonna Pina" and her many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was predeceased by her grandson, Stephen Lee Mercuri.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Petronilla's life on Friday, January 5th at 10:30 at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton. Entombment will follow in the Newton Cemetery Walnut Court Mausoleum. The family will welcome visitors in the Mary Catherine Chapel of the Brasco and Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, Waltham, on Thursday, January 4th from 4-8PM.
