St. Martinville - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church for Wilfred Champagne, 89, who passed away on Thursday, November 2, 2023.
A visitation will take place at the funeral home in St. Martinville on Monday from 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM and will continue on Tuesday from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM.
A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM on Monday.
Rev. David M. Rozas will officiate at the Funeral Mass. Reader will be Anissa Champagne.
Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery.
Wilfred was born September 16, 1934, in St. Martin Parish. He was a family man and took great joy in being a devoted father, always providing love, support, and guidance. His presence brought warmth and laughter to family gatherings, creating cherished memories that will be treasured for generations to come. In his spare time, he enjoyed being in his yard gardening and loved to share what he grew with his family and friends. When you would go to visit him, you could always bet he would have his favorite Westerns playing.
Professionally, Wilfred dedicated over 27 years of service to the Louisiana Department of Transportation working with the bridge maintenance division. His expertise and attention to detail played a vital role in maintaining and improving the integrity of bridges, ensuring safe travel for all. In addition, Wilfred diligently served his community for over three decades at the local community service station in St. Martinville and was a proud member of the Orphan Train Society for many years. His commitment to serving others will be remembered with gratitude.
Survived by his companion of 14 years, Earline Lejeune; daughter, Leona Perez; son, Leonard (Shelia) Champagne; step daughter, Tammy Derouen (Stephen); daughter-in-law, Marlene Champagne Robin; grandchildren, Timothy "Bear" Champagne (Crystal), Misty Champagne, Sabrina Perez, Pancho Perez, Christy Champagne, Courtnee Champagne, Anissa Champagne (Corky), Colt Champagne (Skylar), Whitney Derouen, and Kara Broussard; 15 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; siblings, Shirley Wright, Johnny Champagne (Sandra), Andrew Champagne, Joseph Champagne (Flo), and Larry Champagne (Terry).
He is preceded death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Alice Belaire Champagne; son, Leon Champagne; son-in-law, Francisco Perez; grandson, Roberto Perez, great granddaughter, Sambrea Champagne; parents, Frank and Madeline Douet Champagne; brothers, Henry Frank & Anthony Champagne; and his sisters, Mary Lou Hargroder and Madeline Blanchet.
Pallbearers will be Leonard Champagne, Timothy Champagne, Colt Champagne, Johnny Champagne, Joseph Champagne, and Louis Courville.
