James Munroe Obituary

Graveside services for James Daniel Munroe, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2010, at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Leeann Scarbrough officiating. Visitation will be held at the cemetery after the services. Mr. Munroe died Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham after a short illness. Mr. Munroe was born in Talladega on January 14, 1925. He graduated from Talladega High School in 1943 and graduated from Auburn University in 1950. After his graduation in 1950, he was employed by the Department of Defense at the Anniston Army Depot until his retirement. He was a senior member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers. Mr. Munroe is survived by his wife, Doris Poole Munroe; his son, Mark Daniel Munroe, of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Calvin Wren Munroe and wife,Julia; sister-in-law, Evelyn T. Munroe; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Munroe; son, James Matthew Munroe; brothers, Edwin E. Munroe, William J Munroe, and Cecil H. Munroe. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Silver Run Caravan Class. He served as a Deacon and Elder of the church and served on many committees. He was a active member of the Talladega Municipal Airport Board, International Motor Sports Hall of Fame board member of the A.O.D. Federal Credit Union, having served as Board Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer and Supervisory Committee Member. He was a charter member of The National World War II Museum, Jemison Carnegie Heritage Hall, Friends of the Ritz and previous member of the Chamber of Commerce. He served in the World War II, Fourth Infantry - 12th Regiment and was in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day in 1944 on Utah Beach. He also served across the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Combat. He was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Normandy. Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Silver Run Caravan Class. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or to a charity of one's choice. Online condolences may be made to www.usreyfuneralhome.com.

Sorry to hear of your loss. My family ties go back to Munroe family thru my Grandmother, Luna Lawson Meharg. Her mother was a Monroe. I spent lots of time with her and traveling to Talladega as a child and visiting with the Monroe family. Betty Sue Sims (Decatur, Al.)
